off-list,
What are the benefits of Fuse?
Its meant to replace that mash-up of a media mounting mess that has persisted in Linux for far too long, as the platform moves toward the desktop.
Key features include: a Plug-in style design, so that it is extensible User mountable devices (with no auto-mount set up). Mounts device in users directory rather than somewhere else in the tree Mounts remote resources found on the network via ftp, ssh, SMB/CIFS, NFS and even obdc-database access is planned. Makes it somewhat easier to integrate a Linux machine into a windows network with fuse than with smbmount or cifsmount, because no root or elaborate procedures are needed,
There are plug ins for just about every file system around, including read/write NTFS and databases, etc.
Apparently, not real popular yet, because no one seems to have gotten around to the unmount bit just yet. I still have to do that manually.
Thanks John, If fuse does what you describe, that will be fantastic. Can't wait to see it mature. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.
