Hi everyone. I have a site which works on my internet server but when I transfer it to our intranet in /usr/local/httpd/htdocs I get an error: The method POST is not allowed for the URL /foo/bar.php All I want to do is check a password against whatever the user has entered in a form. SuSE 8.0 with apache and modphp applied. Any ideas anyone? Thanks, Steve.
Hi all,
I'm new to SuSE. Used Mandrake and RedHat.
I have SuSE 8.0 too.
I installed Apache (SuSE rpm), it works without problems.
Then I installed mod_php, also a SuSE rpm. The apache didn't want to
start.
"PHP Fatal error: Unable to start session mm module in Unknown on line
0"
I read this is (was) a known problem. I tried all sort of tricks to get
rid of it but didn't manage. In the end I removed mod_php, compiled and
install my own mod_php with php 4.2.1 (SuSE 8.0 mod_php is 4.1.0). Now
it works... but i'm not happy since I don't have a normal SuSE 8.0
anymore...
Steve, you said you use Apache with mod_php. Was it a normal install of
Suse 8.0 RPMs or you compiled yourself?
I have another problem. When I point netscape to
http://127.0.0.1/phpinfo.php it displays a nice page with info about my
php configuration. When I point Konqueror to the exact address I get
the offer to download the phpinfo.php file. I thought that php is a
serverside script, now I see that with Konqueror i could download the
php instead of executing it.
Any advice? I'm new, and, as you all know, the beginning is difficult
:(
Thank you,
Dan.

Hi. My installation is pure SuSE 8.0 but my error message is different to the one you quote. Very worrying about being able to download php scripts. I use it for the security that serverside gives me. I'm sure that we'll get some apache guru on the list soon who will explain everything to us. Best wishes, steve. Steve, boys and girls (although it should be girls and boys, because
ladies are always first),
I'm happy. I've solved the problem!!! Read below if you have a new
fresh SuSE 8.0 and want to use apache with php with packages from SuSE
8.0!!!
First, in my previous discussion with Steve, there is nothing to worry,
it was just a trick of Konqueror,it was smart enough to detect the
127.0.0.1 is my local box and returned the file to me, because the php
module failed. It's tricky, nice, it's not a security risk.
Now the big problem:
I installed SuSE 8.0 on my laptop. First I downloaded the full suse 8.0
tree (excluding SRC RPMS) = 3GB on my desktop PC. Then I installed on
laptop (using ftp from desktop).
First thing after the system was up and running, i installed apache rpm
(from the same Suse 8.0 downloaded copy). It worked great!
Next thing, i installed mpd_php4 (with mod_php4-core too, was
automatically selected as needed). Imediatelly after that APACHE
REFUSED TO START!!! Error in /var/log/httpd/error_log was: "PHP Fatal
error: Unable to start session mm module in Unknown on line 0".
I won't enter in the details here, I traced with strace, suspected
something with /tmp/session_mm.sem, read a lot of groups.google but in
vain. I compiled and installed PHP 4.2.0 but maybe I didn't set the
correct compiling options, because it didn't crashed, but didn't work
like it should have (something with sessions, blah, blah). As soon as I
put --with-mm in configure and compiled again, I managed to make apache
crash again at start... Sad, but we were zeroing in... read on...
The problem is in mm. Yes, there is a libmm in SuSE 8.0, instaled by
package mm-1.1.3. On the author site, there is another version 1.1.3
(too) but with a date 10 days later. I compiled that mm-1.1.3.tar.gz
(it's simple and quick), it generated libmm.a, libmm.la, libmm.so etc,
I just replaced the originals and hurray!!! it works now... apache was
started without problems, it works nice with the module php...
So, to summarize, you install Suse 8.0, apache and after you install
mod_php apache refuse to start, just compile from surse (
http://www.engelschall.com/sw/mm/ )and replace the libmm stuff in your
suse8 system. No other changes are required... It will take only 10
minutes (for me it took 2 days to realise).
I ordered Suse 8.0 Pro now, it should be with me tomorrow (yes, i
already have all the distro downloaded on the hard, but i want to
contribute somehow, it's my first Linux distro I'b buying). Now, I hope
somebody from suse will see this and they will release a new mm package
because my installation was standard (default without Office), so
sooner or later other users who will try to use mod_php4 with apache
will bump into this.
Now have a good night (day or afternoon, depends where you are on Earth
and at what time of day you read this email) :)
Best wishes,
D@n L@b@ (Internet Re@dy)
Uhhh, is solved now...

I don't think the SuSE packages are broken, maybe this was just something weird on your box? I've installed two 8.0 Pro boxes with the default apache and mod_php and it in both cases, it worked fine. I have updated with YOU, but I didn't see any patches for mm. Anyway, just my experience. Best Regards, Keith -- LPIC-2, MCSE, N+ Linux soldat -- 8.0 SuSE panzer division Got spam? Very useful! So what would the best advice on this thread be?

I have no idea what the problem was. I do know that replacing the mm libs probably wasn't the solution though. -- -ckm

Cristopher, i already explained this: 1. rcapache start -> failure 2. rcapache start -> failure as many times as you want 3. replaced the mm library then, the next step 4. rcapache start -> ok so, was it a solution or was it a miracle? i explained to you on your private mail how i reached this conclusion... of course, you explained to me and i agree that replacing a library is risky, but, this is what we do with linux: risky people make a backup and try to replace the suspected library, the other wait for SuSE to release a patch (if SuSe acknowledges the bug, if we are able to show them how to reproduce it) or go with M$. I had a try, it solved my problem, i thought to inform others to try the same thing if they have the problem, of course, by making backups. You don;t have to believe me, but if you meet this problem, try my 'solution'. It happend with SUSE 8 FTP. Now i installed SUSE 8 PRO boxed edition, and the problem doesn't exist, it works perfectly. Today I received the Suse 8.0 Pro boxed set (the problem described appeared with SuSe 8.0 FTP version). Did a fresh install with the boxed set and the problem didn't appear, everything is smooth :) Maybe the bug is in the FTP version, maybe it was something strange with my computer, anyway, if the problem appear again on the web, i'll have something to suggest (but always on your own risk, make a backup first, etc, etc.) Best wishes to all, Dan ===== To guarantee the free access of citizens to public information, it is indispensable that the encoding of data is not tied to a single provider.
