[SuSE Linux] Method for replying
Hi Folks: I'm wondering if anyone else has gotten frustrated with reply threads that get "lost" in the middle (where someone replies only to the sender, not the list, and a reply from the sender is then sent to the list) so that interim information can get left out. Or the condition where we never hear the reply at all. How about sending all replies back to the list unless there is a privacy concern. I find I learn as much from the replies to other peoples questions as I do from my own questions. I agree 100% with you. It is a pity that the only Reply option is the list instead of the original author and CC'd to the list. In fact if and when I reply to a thread, I usually delete any other email address which is not the mailinglist address. My 1p's worth. There is. It's a switch in Majordomo. "Reply-To:" can be set either to the list or to the sender.
I am connected to another list which automagicaly sends ALL replys to the list.
What it does is what I wrote above; it sets the "Reply-To:" to the address of the list.
Can't this lists admin set us up like that?
Sure he can. And he already wrote explaining why he doesn't. It makes it very easy for mail-loops to occur when people have their email clients set up for vacation auto-responders, etc. Yes, majordomo can be configured so that most of the time this doesn't happen. But it's neither easy nor foolproof. I agree, I prefer having the "Reply-To:" set to the list. But I'm not the list manager, and I must respect his decision to cut traffic on his and other networks. "Reply-To:" munging is the subject of many religious wars. Let's not start one here. Jeff -- Jeff Lasman <jl-lists@jatek.net>, Internet Products Manager, Jatek Corp. Agree also. I hit "Reply To Sender and All" in Netscape then delete the first name in "To:3 (sender) and make the Cc:ed one (list) the To: Seems a much better way to do it.
The problem is the list. If you hit "Reply" it sends an email to the individual that posted not to the list itself. If you want your reply to hit the list too you have to manually type in a cc: or bcc: of suse-linux-e@suse.com which is a pain. Whoever set up the list a SuSE should change it. I'm often amazed at how poorly many of the Linux distro lists are run. RedHat uses a program that I've never heard of and it's extremely unreliable and awkward. Caldera's had archiving problems (the problem being that the archive was non-existant) which may or may not have been fixed. No, we won't change this behaviour. We had it configured like this some time ago and we experienced mail loops on a regular basis due to broken mail servers.

Mario, this behaviour *IS SENSIBLE AND WANTED*. We had *NICE* things happening: someone (in Austria, I belive) had all his e-mail transfered to a fax service that turned to be out of order and send a return e-mail to the list, resulting in another nice mail *FROM* the list that couldnŽt be forwarded on fax and.... Hell, you can imagine what the expression "mail loop" means. Same thing happend with some (german) users that used the skyper paging service for that. (I still keep some memories in .procmailrc from that time) I anoyed me a few times as well, but thatŽs nothing compared to a mail loop at a bank holliday weekend and all complains about that *INTO* the list.
