[S.u.S.E. Linux] Problems with Wabi 2.2
Hy there I bought Wabi for Linux to run Word in it. After the installation I got problems with the current color depth. I'm using a default depth of 16 bit. When wabi starts the only result is that I'm get the message: X Server has unsupported default depth Unrecoverable Error in Wabi Unsupported display depth 16 in init_gdi. Wabi will exit now. I tried it with using 8 bit as the default depth and it works. Is there a possibility which enables wabi to work under 16 bit color depth ?? The only way to fudge it is to use the Olivetti VNC software to bring up an 8 bit VNC session within a 16 bit window. Wabi works but is a bit sedate because of the extra software layer. The really nice thing is that the Wabi windows only stick to the VNC window not the main screen so you can iconise the whole lot with one click. There is another solution: try the experimental Xnest X Server. This allows for nesting X Servers, so you are able to run an 8 bit server inside of an 16 bit one. Xnest is in package xextra. I'm no specialist on how to set it up, but I saw a friend of mine running WABI this way on a 16 bit display.

Hi, due to some discussions I had on the wabi list in the last time, the Xnest cannot support an embedded 8-bit wabi, if Xnest is running with 16-bit (unfortunately). The Xi Graphics (AccelaratedX) server for some cards (eg. Matrox Millenium II) supports overlays. For such servers, it is possible to start Xnest at a different depth than the "root" server.
Xi Graphics has a list of cards/chipsets for which they have a server that supports overlays on their website (www.xig.com).
I do use overlays (24+8) mode with my Millenium II, and it *is* really nice to be able to run WABI in an 8-bit Xnest.
I'm assuming that you're using Xnest so that your Wabi apps aren't sticky. I recall having sticky apps problems some months ago. I've since added CDE and the window manager (dtwm) runs in a way that makes Wabi not be sticky. This is true of both Tri-Teal and Xi Graphics versions of CDE.
