can not connect to internet ,or, it just connects as root ,or, /etc/resolv.conf is missing (error-KPPP)
Yesterday, after had read "PCTel HSP MicroModem Configuration mini-HOWTO" i've got to connnect to internet as root. As a simple user, I logged in but the connection fails. The following errors appeared to me: ------------------first error----------------------- (openning KPPP) [error-KPPP] /etc/resolv.conf is missing or can't be read! Ask your system administrator to create this file (can be empty) with appropriate read and write permissions. [OK] --------------second error------------------ (connecting to:) Sorry, can't create modem lock file Sorry, even with the first error (trying to open KPPP) I resolved to configure my dialer to call my ISP -and it was done- but the second error appeared when calling. should it be the fact that my login name doesn't have the "power" to write some logs? or to certain directories? Shoul I gain ample powers to me? Any help? a. Ps-user1 (it's me) and user2 (it is my wife) want connection to internet as ROOT has. -- Adagilson Batista Bispo da Silva Bibliotecário FIOCRUZ-Centro de Pesquisa Aggeu Magalhães Fone 81 3302-6524 -- Para dar de baja la suscripción, mande un mensaje a: suse-linux-s-unsubscribe@suse.com Para obtener el resto de direcciones-comando, mande un mensaje a: suse-linux-s-help@suse.com -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com

/etc/resolv.conf holds the nameservers. touch /etc/resolv.conf then add the ip addresses of your nameservers. the permissions for mine are set to 644, rw r r, not sure if thst's right but it works.

Try setting the set uid bit on /usr/sbin/pppd.
i can't remember if you have to do the same with kppp.
If that doesn't work try kinternet or wvdial.

Hi Adagilson, Could this be that same problem many had with the missing "kppp" file? Check /etc/ppp/peers/ for a file "kppp" and if it is not there create it with this one line in the file: plugin passwordfd.so Save the file and try your connection again.
