Hi, Has anyone succeeded installing the 2.4.12 kernel with SuSE 7.1? I tried yesterday, but when I rebooted after compiling it, the bootup froze at 'VFS: Root fs not mounted'. There were also error messages under the modules_install referring to unresolved symbols in ide drivers. 2.4.9 installed like a breeze with no problems, so I wondered if anyone experienced the same errors as me with the 2.4.12 kernel. I have tried it some times now, both the SuSE and the Vanilla edition, with no luck yet. Regards, Jostein

I had exactly the same problem until I read the README in the ftp directory with the kernel rpms. Once the new kernel rpm is installed (I used YAST1 for this) then as root do: $> mk_initrd $> lilo This worked for me. The problem was that my root directory was on a SCSI drive and therefore the SCSI driver needs to be loaded before the root directory can be mounted. It therefore needs to be in an INITIAL RAMDISK (called initrd) created with mk_initrd. This then needs to be configured into the boot process by running lilo. Hope this helps, Mark

According to the readme the kernel RPMS from the mantel subdirectory of the SuSE ftp site have reiserfs support compiled into the kernel, not as a module. I don't know how recent a change this is. Therefore the reiserfs stuff doesn't need to go into the initrd. However, as I understand it (as a novice) the mk_initrd command checks to see what you need and includes it. I think it checks in the file /etc/rc.config looking at the variable START_INITRD. It does specify this in the readme mentioned above. Cheers, Mark

I am using the vanilla one as we speak. The Suse modded one does not compile when I choose the same options as I use with Suse 2.4.10. The suse mods add some undocumented option to do with IDE (I forget the name, and you seem to have to compile that in, whatever it is)...at least with my particular option choices. Your problem maybe a scsi root disk or a reiserfs one, in which case you need to make an initrd in the former case, and tick the box marked reiserfs in the menuconfig for the latter. One interesting thing is that without the Suse mods the Alsa modules complain that you are loading a tainted kernel with unlicensed modules. I test these things in the wan hope that the Matrox G450 driver has been fixed to work properly when you have framebuffer installed. The only person who has answered me about this has suggested a commercially available alternative to the XFREE86 servers. -- Regards Cliff
