[SLE] No USB - what's the best scanner + printer set up?!
Hi all, my mother's machine, I discovered to my dismay, doesn't have a USB port. She's running SuSE 6.4 and wants me to investigate buying a printer and a scanner for her. What are her best options? The printer isn't the problem, and apparently folk on this list have had good results with the Epson 760 colour printer. She can go beyond the most basic items, but the question I'm most confused about is whether to go SCSI or not with her scanner? Some scanners come with a SCSI card - anyone tried such packages under SuSE? Apparently these aren't *proper* SCSI cards and might not work for Linux? If SCSI *isn't* a sensible price / performance issue (i.e. I have to buy a proper SCSI card out of the money allocated for the printer and scanner), is there a way to set up a parallel printer and scanner combination under SuSE which works? Can anyone tell me a reasonable printer / scanner combination to buy her? Any help would be appreciated, as I would only have the one weekend to set things up, and I wouldn't have any access to this group over there! :-( Some friends at work suggested buying a USB PCI card, but I don't know if they work under Linux and it sounds a bit dodgy to me. I have to admit being a bit nervous about getting the things for her, as exchanging things is a lot of hassle and postage expense... k. -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq

Believe that this depends on the card supplied. I think some people have had success with these cheap cards on Linux. Would check to see who is supplying the scsi card with the scanner.

I'm afraid that I am a bit biased, but I recommend the Microtek scanner. I have been using this brand since I started using Linux and have had no problems with it at all. I do use a 'real' scsi card tho. There is scsi cards that are cheaper than Adaptec. I use a Advansys card myself and again no problems with Linux. One thing I like about the Advansys cards, is that there is only one driver for any of their scsi cards. It really all comes down to checking around at your local stores and seeing what is available and what you like. Just about any scsi scanner will work with Linux.

k.
Hope this helps and good luck with both the printer and scanner. Nevada -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq

I'd definitely reccommend going scsi - you've got the best chance of SANE
supporting your scanner. I have an Advansys-based IWill card, cost me 22 UK
pounds, non-bootable but is ideal for scanner, DAT drive, etc.

Hi, I got rid of my Agfa Snapscan 1212U and bought an Epson 1200S scanner. I added this to a Domex SCSI card which came with my Mirai CD Burner. SuSE 6.4 and 7.0 both installed and configured everything automatically. The scanner originally came with a cheap Adaptec card which also worked OK. Then i realised that i had 2 cards taking 2 PCI slots for a device each when each actually supported 8 devices. Doh!! I would recommend the Epson Perfection 1200S.
