Greetings all, Seems like I have seen several here talking about or complaining about the new graphics cards that are not "Built by ATI" but only powered by. Here is a mail I got from the XFree86 list today. Hope it helps. Patrick ----------------------------- For those who don't read /., here is a message from ATI on the problems with the ATI driver on "Powered by ATI" cards: "Terry Makedon (Senior Product Manager, Software for ATI Technologies) writes "Last week we posted a set of unified Linux drivers. These drivers were only loading up on 'Built by ATI' cards. Through our various feedback mechanisms we have determined that there is a large community of 'Powered by ATI' Linux users that did not benefit from our Linux drivers. At this point we are happy to announce an update to our Linux driver (ver. 2.5.1) which will work on both 'Powered by' and 'Built by.' ATI's driver and software strategy is firmly based on responsiveness and we greatly appreciate the feedback our Linux users have provided. Patrick ----------------------------- [in a nutshell, ATI's drivers now support "powered by" cards as well as "built by" -- the new version number is 2.5.1]
Wooohooo! way to go /.! (or is that \.?) I just DL'd it and FINALLY I have an XF86log file that reads "direct rendering ENABLED" :) :) :) But, it isn't exactly time to break out the champagne -- KDE still complains (when I start tuxracer) that my system doesn't have 3d accelleration, but glxgears and glxinfo runs fine -- it is ENTIRELY possible that I haven't installed it correctly [or there are "remnants" of other installation attempts] which is causing a conflict. As to tuxracer itself, I got the initial "snow" screen and music, but pressing "start race" crashed out tuxracer and my mouse froze. I could still go to console screens (ctl-alt-fn1), but that ended up with an off-frequency display [good thing I can type "shutdown -r now" in the dark :) ]

I think this is more a KDE problem rather than that of the drivers. I have an nVidia card it gives me the same message when using Tux Racer and Chromium. I have not had any problem with the way these games play. I also run quite a few full blown 3D games such as UT, UT2003, Tribes2, etc and have had no problems as well. If you have any sort of games such as these I would run them with the new drivers to see the response. I'm fairly certain that if Tux Racer et al are running that these will too. Either way I still think that if your not having any problems the games rendering and video performance than my assumption would be correct. It's a SuSE problem, not a KDE or driver problem. SuSE has a small program called 3Ddiag that is run when you run a game from the SuSE default menu. If the SuSE hardware tools don't have your card listed as capable of 3D under linux, and that is the case for the ATI cards, it will flag it. Solution: bypass the CheckHardware script by editing the menu item to run the game directly. Anders

Kinda sucks that the users of a 64M DDR card can't play UT2003 because ATI won't support it and XFree86 does do all that's required to run the game. I switched to ATI because the drivers were suppose to be good and open source. If ATI is just going to release binary drivers then I will most like return to nVidia where ALL their current cards and many older cards are supported by a truely unified driver. /end rant. ;) -- Ben Rosenberg ---===---===---===--- mailto:ben@whack.org Tell me what you believe..
