[opensuse] OpenOffice.org only 32bit?
Hello, I installed the x86_64 version of 10.2, everything works fine. :-) I was only surprised to see that OpenOffice.org is only available as 32bit. A quick look in the source RPM shows the reason: it doesn't work with Sun Java in 64bit. I don't understand: in 10.1, I had both in 64bit and it worked well. Anyway, could it work with GCC-Java 64bit? I've tried recompiling it, but it failed (I forgot the error message, so I'm trying again now to get it). The result, through RPM dependency, is a mess of 32bit packages that waste space in my system. In 10.1 I was able to remove almost all of them by installed 64bit versions of everything. Would it be possible to provide 64bit packages of OpenOffice.org relying on another Java like GCC-Java? Does it alreadly exist in a RPM-MD repository? Thanks in advance, -- Thibaut Cousin http://www.thibaut-cousin.net

I don't know about that.

My understanding was it was pulled because it is such a huge package it wouldn't fit on the DVD9, so they only included the i586 version. You can get the x86_64 rpms from Factory repository. It does need x86_64 java, i.e. java-1.5.0-sun x86_64. Thanks for the tip, it worked. :-) I hadn't thought of looking in Factory for a stable package. I agree that OOo is a *big* package, but putting the 32bit on the x86_64 installation DVD? I'm not sure I can find any logic in that. Now I'm down to a handful of 32bit packages, but they can't removed until acroread or realplayer go 64bit. ;-) Thanks again and regard, -- Thibaut Cousin http://www.thibaut-cousin.net

Just the main package is 107,7 Mo for x86_64 and 99,8 Mo in i586. The localization packages are the same size, and the KDE package is slighty bigger in x86_64 (+14 ko). This is largely balanced by the space I gain by removing useless 32bit packages on my system. :) -- Thibaut Cousin http://www.thibaut-cousin.net

If I understand your question correctly, it isn't so much how big it is, but on the DVD9 package is the packages for both arch, thus it would mean having both i586 AND x86_64 OO, adding several hundred meg size to a tight 8.5 GB. From bugzilla, the reason it was removed from the install source was because Yast would prefer to install it for an x86_64 system if it was in the install sources over the i586 version included by default, possibly breaking things post install. -- Joe Morris Registered Linux user 231871 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
I am a newbie. How do you do this? Yast setting, manually download and install? Thanks. Thibaut Cousin wrote:

Please don't top-post. Write your answer at the bottom of the mail, after the last message, so that it can be read in a linear way. Now for your question, I didn't use YaST or Smart because I don't want them to point to the factory repository (it's going to become unstable soon, as developement resumes for 10.3). So I manually downloaded the packages and installed them with RPM. First of course I had to remove the i586 packages. After all that, I was able to make a big clean up by removing many 32bit packages, but that's optional of course. ;-) -- Thibaut Cousin http://www.thibaut-cousin.net

In 10.2beta4, the 64 bit OO.o had a bug with note placement. Right-click on a cell, Insert note. The note should be far away from the cell, even out of the screen for cell row >50. Between 64 bit with that bug and 32 bit without it, the right choice was made. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

That explains why it is not on the DVD-ISO, but why is it not in the online-installation source? Sven -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
