[opensuse] MySQL GUI frontends
I've played around with MySQL on the command line, creating an addressbook database and importing some data. I'd like to use a GUI frontend to add/edit the data, but I'm not sure what's available in linux. Any suggestions? Happy Christmas :) -- Bob openSUSE 10.3, Kernel 2.6.22.13-0.3-default, KDE 3.5.8 Intel Celeron 2.53GB, 2GB DDR RAM, nVidia GeForce 7600GS -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I think it's pretty funny how that name can conceivably be pronounced as either "recall" or "wreck-all" -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thanks. Rekall seems to fit the bill, and is easy to set up. I'd previously tried OOo Base, but it seemed to want to recreate the database in .odb format, whereas Rekall is using the same MySQL tables, so I can administer the database from the command line or through the Rekall GUI. Knoda seemed to have the same problem as Base. Thanks to everyone for all the other suggestions. OOo should be able to connect to an existing database, although setting up OOo to use mysql (or any other engine) is far from trivial. Knoda I haven't been lucky using it. In previous versions it crashed or didn't display what I wanted, etc, etc. Rekall has a fast and very easy to use interface, either for database design or use; plus you can use it with mysql, postgres, etc. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. Good evening Bob, You could do worse than looking at either phpmyadmin - http://www.phpmyadmin.net/home_page/index.php or MySQL Administrator - http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/gui-tools/5.0.html I tend to use phpmyadmin on my remote servers, with a strong password and an obscured path. Mysql administrator is good for workstation work locally where I have a GUI. Have a look at both and see what you prefer. Have a great Christmas and a happy new year. :) Cheers Pete -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Several: I use most often - since there's very little install - phpMySQL. It comes with openSUSE and runs in Apache. There's also the MySQL Administrator. Both of those come with openSUSE and can be loaded via YaST or SMART or whatever you tool of choice is. I've had good luck with the MySQL tools as well: http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/gui-tools/5.0.html HTH! -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Great for oracle, but useless for mysql or any other rdbms last I checked - or have they done an extreme makeover on it? Joe -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I've used it with mysql. Admittedly, I'm not really a DBA, so I haven't used it for much more than simple stuff, but it seems to work well enough for that. I know it was written for Oracle, but it does work with mysql. But as I said, I'm no DBA, so I'm not a good judge of what's great or not Anders -- Madness takes its toll -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I have that installed - but there's no query browser or workbench that I can see. How do I run them? Mine showed up as 'Database Query Tool' in 'New Applications.'

Use the YaST software installation module, and it will list the files that are part of a package, and where they are placed on your system. Only after they are installed. Or, you can use "pin", which will show them "before" and "after". - -- Cheers, Carlos E. ahh, new applications - that is very nice. Actually another post clued me in. Turns out there is a seperate mysql-queryworkbench rpm to install.

sqldeveloper from oracle, dbvis (google it). You'll need to find and install the java mysql code, usually called mysql-connector-java-X.X.X.tar.gz for either of the above. sqldeveloper seems more powerful generally, but dbvis has a nifty graph view based on foreign keys.
