More on the Java Licence
There was a question about the Java licence the other day. Here's an interesting article on it, particularly in regards to Red Hat. http://www.regdeveloper.co.uk/2006/05/18/red_hat_sun_java_license/ Sun Microsystems' new GNU/Linux-friendly Java license does not go far enough for Red Hat. It says Sun should have open-sourced Java instead. Brian Stevens, Red Hat CTO, told The Register Sun should open-source its Java Virtual Machine (JVM) (which is licensed by Red Hat) so developers can improve the software's real-time capabilities. <continued> Oh, and on that note - KDE has joined the ODF alliance - http://linux.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/05/19/1931228 - why? Because they're Kool! :) -- kai - www.perfectreign.com www.livebeans.com - the new NetBeans community 43...for those who require slightly more than the answer to life, the universe and everything.

Yep, I was wrong in my assumption that Sun had open sourced Java. They've gone half way. They do keep saying it is their intention to full open source Java though in accordance with the GNU Public License. It's possible that they have to work out a few more hooks that need unravelling before it is GPL'd. -- ============================================== I am only human, please forgive me if I make a mistake it is not deliberate. ============================================== PLEASE DON'T drink and drive it's not clever, it's just stupid. I think the source is out there free for anyone to modify. I know I downloaded it at one point You just can't call it java without going through their testing and having it certified.

Please get your facts straight. Sun has never said it would use the GNU license for Java. http://news.com.com/2102-7344_3-6072760.html?tag=st.util.print This page includes a video of Rich Green on stage at JavaOne saying: "It isn't a question of whether, but a question of how." -- Glenn Holmer (Linux registered user #16682) "The SUSE and Novell developers and managers are as well passionate about KDE and GNOME." -Andreas Jaeger, SUSE

I would not have specifically said the GNU license if I had not read it myself! If I can find the link I will post it on here. -- ============================================== I am only human, please forgive me if I make a mistake it is not deliberate. ============================================== PLEASE DON'T drink and drive it's not clever, it's just stupid. They will use their own open source license for control and legal reasons. Personally I think this would be great if it ever happened one way or the other as that will give the open source community a language that is cross platform and companies are using it for mission critical applications in many places. If it was under the GNU License it would be even better, but I am not a layer to understand the full implications. regards, george

Actually, they are considering it, although they have still not said it's the license they will use: http://blogs.sun.com/jonathan from Jonathan Schwartz' 05/23/2006 blog entry: "we're now making serious progress on open sourcing Java (and despite the cynics, using a GPL license is very much *on* the table)" -- Glenn Holmer (Linux registered user #16682) "I am closing down. That's very similar to what I read.
