[opensuse] Opera 10 crawls
Using opera because I like it.System 11.1, KDE 4.3.1 regularly updated. De last week I found that Opera is very slow and sometimes even does not seem to respond. At first I thought that my internet connection was to blame but after using Konquerer on the same sites I was struggling with with Opera I found a very responsive webbrowser.Still like to work with Opera but need to get it up to expectations. Opera used: Version 10.00 Build 4585 Platform Linux System i686, 2.6.27.29-0.1-default Qt library 3.3.8b Java Java Runtime Environment installed Any ideas where to start improving my browser? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

i'm aware of two or three possible reasons for this behavior. you'll find discussions about these on the opera news server http://news.opera.com:119 one possibility is that you are using ip6 resolution, which sometimes leads to problems with opera and other webbrowsers. even disabling ip6 in your networkmanager or yast doesn't always solve the problem. i didn't further investigate this, since even though i am using ip6, this did not affect me. another known bug of opera up to version 10 is that processes called when viewing flash or other plugins don't always terminate. there are "operapluginwrapper" and another process, "opera...cleaner..." (forgot the exact name), which often don't terminate. eventually one has to kill them manually to prevent opera gobbling up resources. last and probably least important is the fact that there is a qt4 version of opera 10 available, but not from openSUSE repos (when i checked last). after replacing the oS version using qt3 with the one using qt4 from the opera website, i thought i'd seen a noticable speed improvement. now i think that was by accident or due to illusion, and opera seems to be as fast or slow as it used to be when installed from openSUSE. -- phani. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Dear Phani, In the meantime I have stopped using ip6 and downloaded the Opera 10.10 rpm with qt4. For the moment I have found some usability back but still have to look for the processes on Opera which do not terminate. One indication that there is still some problem is the fact that even after a site has been downloaded (at least visible) the red cross is has still not changed to the "reload" button. At least now I am able to stop activity manual in those cases. Before that effort was without success. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

if the page-opening process doesn't stop, that may indicate a network
problem on your end. some time ago when google servers were down,
many websites wouldn't stop downloading, sometimes not even show up
in the browser, if they were using google analytics--because they were
trying to contact those servers which didn't work.
re. other problems, like opera processes not terminating, you'll have to
talk to the opera lists. i'm not following that newsgroup closely, but know
that the topic is going on there. (check

Any ideas where to start improving my browser?
Hmm, Short answer -- Dunno? (but I have a guess) But I'm running w/o any problems: Version information Version 10.00 Build 4585 Platform Linux System x86_64, 2.6.25.20-0.5-default Qt library 4.5.2 ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Java Runtime Environment installed Try downloading and installing the qt4 version from the opera ftp site. Anders J. provided the links in response to an earlier thread. I'm running the qt4 version now and it work great: ftp://ftp.opera.com/pub/opera/linux/1000/final/en/x86_64/ or ftp://ftp.opera.com/pub/opera/linux/1000/final/en/i386/ -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. Hmm,
Short answer -- Dunno? (but I have a guess) But I'm running w/o any problems:
Downloaded opera-10.10-4644.gcc4.qt4.i386.rpm and since then opera is more or less usable. Qt4 version 4.5.2. Konquerer still beats it in speed of downloading the same site where opera stalls and needs a second start. Still prefer opera ;) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

You got something else going on their Constant. Opera is every bit as fast as konqueror or FF. If you are experiencing slowness from it, then I can only think that you have something misconfigured somewhere on the mail side that is slowing down the browsing side. Double check your mail settings to make sure you don't have the refresh set to 1 minute or some chat session that is continually invoked. After you have it to your liking, go to the build service and find a nice 5 meg or so download to download and compare between opera, konqueror and FF. You shouldn't see any difference. If you do, then post back. ALSO, make sure you have "Opera Turbo" turned OFF unless you are on a dial-up service. I haven't messed with it, but I have seen the recommendation to turn it off if your don't need it. Good luck. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. after updating from KDE 4.3.1 to 4.3.2 i found that opera (from opera.com) was using more than usual CPU cycles. it didn't affect it's operation or my system noticably, but i didn't like it. uninstalled the version i was using and installed opera via "zypper in opera", i.e., from openSUSE non-oss repos. this time i got a version that uses Qt 4.5.2 and doesn't appear to use my CPUs as much as the previous one (opera.com). i didn't notice any slowdown or other bugs or quirks so far either. i don't think this has anything to do with my choice of KDE, but rather that opera rpm has been updated on the oS repo. as it's generally advisable to use openSUSE repos over external ones (they're getting updated and adjusted as required by the distro), i'd recommend that you try that one again and see how it performs for you. -- phani. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
