LILO boot order on LILO diskette
Greetings to SuSEers,
I have two SuSE 7.1 systems; one has LILO on the MBR
of HD, the other has NT4 so LILO created a LILO Boot
diskette. I have been able to re-arrange the order
of boot choices on the LILO graphical screen on the
LILO on HD MBR system as shown on the SDB ( edit
/etc/lilo.conf, then issue 'lilo' from cmd line).
But when I re-arrange the choices on the diskette
sys and rerun lilo the boot screen is in the old
order. I must assume that there is something on the
lilo diskette that must be changed to re-arrange the
boot order. However I am unable to mount the lilo
diskette, the sys error says "you must specify the
filesystem"; but this is from a "mount /floppy" cmd
issued from console. I CAN mount msdos diskettes w/o
error.
Can any one help me understand what I need to do to
change the order of boot choices on this system?
Thanks ................... PeterB

Dear Mads, Here is the /etc/lilo.conf from the machine I can't change: boot = /dev/sdb1 vga = normal read-only menu-scheme = Wg:kw:Wg:Wg prompt timeout = 80 message = /boot/message image = /boot/vmlinuz_24 label = linux_2.4 root = /dev/sdb3 initrd = /boot/initrd_24 image = /boot/vmlinuz label = linux root = /dev/sdb3 initrd = /boot/initrd optional image = /boot/vmlinuz.suse label = suse root = /dev/sdb3 initrd = /boot/initrd.suse optional other = /dev/sda1 label = windows image = /boot/memtest.bin label = memtest86 This is the order I WANT, but it is not the order displayed!! Hi Peter I have lilo.conf on floppy to boot - choice of 3 kernels, dos, and 2 seperate suse-linux partitions. mount -t ext2 /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy didn't work here for me either , so it's not e2fs . mount -t minix /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy so try minix in your command-line - like above - should work for you. I checked here , and minix fs works for suse-linux fd e2fs doesn't work , I think lilo makes a minix filesystem on the floppy boot disk. else, you may not have filesystems - minix - ext2 set , or something fuged in your kernel ?? BTW , Peter, sorry for getting your name wrong before JohnWM On Thu, 10 May 2001, Peter B. Van Campen wrote:

it sounds like you need the "-t" option when you mount the floppy. What type of filesystem is the floppy formatted? Perhaps "msdos" or "ext2". If the floppy is msdos format the mount command should be: mount -t msdos /dev/fd0 /floppy just replace the parameter for the "-t" option with the appropriate filesystem type. Dale & SuSErs I cannot mount the lilo boot diskette with: mount /floppy (using the fstab entry to specify the auto option) it replies "mount you must specify the filesystem type" mount -t ext2 /dev/fd0 /floppy fails with reply: "wrong fs type. bad option, bad superblock on /dev/fd0, or too many mounted file systems" mount -t msdos /dev/fd0 /floppy fails with reply: "wrong fs type. bad option, bad superblock on /dev/fd0, or too many mounted file systems" mount -t minix /dev/fd0 /floppy fails with reply: "wrong fs type. bad option, bad superblock on /dev/fd0, or too many mounted file systems" but on a mount /floppy cmd when a msdos diskette is inserted it mounts correctly!! Hello again Peter
mount -t minix /dev/fd0 /floppy fails with Wrong syntax !!!!!! it should be mount -t minix /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy
and be sure you first, in your /mnt directory do mkdir floppy in other words, you make a directory called, floppy in the /mnt directory for mounting floppys of any filesystem you need. I know that my lilo - floppy made minix file system - so I'm pretty sure that that's what you need . Unless you made the floppy with another kernel that had minix support , and your present kernel does not ? Hope this helps cheers John WM

Nope, totally correct syntax ;-) On your own system, you're free to
mount things where ever you like.

Hello Philipp Of course you are right. He could mount the floppy even on /mnt I mainly wanted to reaffirm that I found it to be minix fs, on my floppy. I'm Sure curious to why he can't mount his lilo floppy though . maybe he could look at the sdb - 'How to create a system boot disk' http://sdb.suse.de/sdb/en/html/kgw_bootdisketten.html as always, we appreciate your help, critique, suggestions, and concern John WM On Sat, 12 May 2001, Philipp Thomas wrote:
