[sle] Questions about Linux software and what to replace Outlook and Organiser with.....
Hi All, My name is Shane Broomhall, I work with windows software on a daily basis, I am in the process of learning Linux and I have installed SUSE 7 on my IBM laptop, as a Dual boot machine. I am still at a basic stage and learning how to use the system, that is why I am still doing all my work under Win 98. I am hoping to find programs that can perform the same jobs as : Microsoft Outlook with regard to handling Email and automatically placing it into folders using rules or similar & Lotus Organiser for booking appointments. I am planning on dual booting until I am comfortable enough to handle problems that may occur and getting my Winmodem to work if possible. I am planning to use Star Office as my office suite to replace Office 2000. I would appreciate any comments from anyone on applications I can use to replace Outlook and Organiser with similar functionality. Thanks in advance. shanebroomhall@computer.org
Hi, I use KMail and Korganizer for these tasks. I find them comfortable to use and not very different from M$-Outbreak. I can recommend the KDE2.0.1, and even the KDE2.1 betas are stable enough to use on a daily basis ( which I do :-) -tosi On Tue, Jan 30, 2001 at 10:17:16PM +1000, Shane Broomhall wrote:

StarOffice 5.2 is a good choice. It is very tightly integrated between wp, db, mail, news, browsing, but I don't remember an organizer amoung its options. KOffice (KWord, KOrganizer, KMail, KNews,KSpread, Konqueror and KIllustrator) is begining to look very good. Try the newly released (yesterday!) 2.1beta1 version. And say good by to the virii. Welcome to the world of Linux!

There are many email clients under Linux. The names of some GUI ones include Nautilus, Evolution, Spruce, Balsa, Mahogany, ISHMail, Sylpheed, Pronto, KMail, Netscape, etc. You'll find the home pages of any of these by searching on www.freshmeat.net. A lot of these clients will aloow you to sort mail with rules, but for best effect I would use procmail/fetchmail to sorting email.
Lotus Organiser for booking appointments.
KOrganiser is one possibility, there are others, but I don't have much experience in the field.
I am planning on dual booting until I am comfortable enough to handle problems that may occur and getting my Winmodem to work if possible.
This *may* be possible, but it will require a lot of time and effort (assuming that it'll work at all). The best advice is always to get a real modem... ;-)

If StarOffice doesn't suit you, there are other office suites available. That one of our main advantages of Windows - we have choice! Have fun, Chris -- __ _ -o)/ / (_)__ __ ____ __ Chris Reeves /\\ /__/ / _ \/ // /\ \/ / ICQ# 22219005 _\_v __/_/_//_/\_,_/ /_/\_\
Hi, Man Ohhhhhhhh :) do not tire yourself by thinking . . . of replacements ~ do NOT compare . . . M$ is one field . . . Unix/Linux have other charms. StarOffice does just fine { Applix [ liked by Banks] is lighter } ~ use Opera or, Netscape, as Browser ~ do NOT use Browser also for e-mail for e-mail, use Mutt, Kmail, or for high_powered stuff, use <Sylpheed> .. . . Unix/Linux have other charms. best wishes -- ____________ sent on Linux ____________
