[opensuse] Problems with PDF - Seamonkey & Firefox

I have noticed some problems with opening PDFs in Firefox and Seamonkey, but not Konqueror browsers. When they fail, I get a blank or black display. Here is one link that I tried today: http://ryerson.ca/content/dam/currentstudents/forms/OfficialTranscriptReques... Konqueror has no problem with this link, but Firefox and Seamonkey both choke on it. This is on 64 bit 12.1 and Adobe reader is installed. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

This Acrobat<->Gecko bug is sooo old. Basically the second PDF to be opened never opens because Acrobat freezing. We have no idea what's happening here. I usually advice people to remove acroread entirely or disable the plugin in the plugin settings of Firefox or Seamonkey so that they offer evince or okular or whatever else. Even opening a PDF outside of the browser window with acroread seems to work. Just the plugin misbehaves for whatever reason. Yes, in the Software Manager the following is stated: QUOTE Adobe Reader is often the only program able to process complicated PDF files, such as PDF forms. However, there are many bugs where we cannot do anything about because it is proprietary binary-only software. Please consider whether it is possible to use free PDF readers like okular, evince, xpdf, ghostview, ... instead. Before I wrote above, I went looking for this plugin and it certainly is not something which Mozilla has as either an extension or a plugin. So it has to be something which comes with openSUSE and, in fact, there is an acroread rpm listed in Software Manager. And there is a proviso against it as I quoted in my earlier response. I use Seamonkey almost exclusively on my 11.3 32-bit system. In edit->preferences->Browser->Helper applications, I have it set as 'always ask' for PDF. That way a small window pops up and asks what app I want to use to open the pdf file with and I have that set at Okular. Same thing happens when I click on a pdf file in an e-mail in kmail...small window asking what app I want to use to open it with. The only thing Seamonkey screws up for me on my system is sometimes I can click on a link to open something and if it's an .asp thing, it won't work. Hopefully the pdf thing will work now for you though. I don't download the openSuSE browsers from a repository though, I download straight from Seamonkey or Firefox or Opera etc. For instance, the latest version of Seamonkey I now have (an update the other day as a matter of fact) is 2.7 -- There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. Thanks for posting this. I have been trying to remember who was asking about not being able to view pdf files using okular and was getting Gimp as the default viewer. Am I on the right track here? If so, the answer to this problem is: okular is sitting in /usr/bin/ so when you use Firefox to view the pdf file select the Other which is underneath the Gimp (Default) and then go browsing to /usr/bin and double-click on 'okular' - and take it from there. You will now find that okular will appear in Edit/Preferences/Applications. I have always had that problem when using Adobe. I resolved it by removing Acroreader from my system, and configuring the browswer (Seamonkey in this case) to use mozplugger for PDF files. That loads the system default application, Okular, as a plugin, which works just fine. There is just one small problem with this, however -- I am not able to search within a PDF file loaded into the browser, and have been unable to find any setting which might resolve it. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
