Which version of SuSE is better for old PC (386, 486).
They all run, and with the better memory management of the 2.2 series kernels and speed improvements to glibc 2.1.2, the latest release (6.3 ATM) is still the best.
I had a problem reinstalling an IBM Aptiva with SuSE 6.2, which flawlessly ran 5.3 before (if I remember well). YaST said early that it does not have enough memory to run (6 Megs of RAM). The management decided the machine is not even worth the effort of trying to go back to 5.3. Yet, just to show them that Linux wins, I would have liked if it worked :-). -- François Pinard http://www.iro.umontreal.ca/~pinard -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

You'll have to manually create and activate a swap partition during install. I've attached an old message from Lenz that explains the details. Ciao, Stefan <STRONG>attached mail follows:</STRONG><HR> On Thu, 11 Mar 1999, Rafael E. Herrera wrote:
Here is more information I could get while working on this:
After loading the network card module SMC-Ultra with io and irq parameters, so no probing is done, I get this in the log console:
VFS: Disk change detected on dev 02:00 VFS: Can't find a minix or minix V2 filesystem on dev 02:00 VFS: Can't find an ext2 filesystem on dev 02:00 smc-ultra.c: v2.02 <blah>... eth0: SMC Ultra at 0x280 <blah>....
I don't know the nature of the VFS error but it happens when I load the module (I tested.) At this point if I try the FTP install, it fails as I described before. If I try a CDROM install (with a SuSE 5.3 CD in the drive) it loads YaST with no error.
The ftp-Installation requires some more RAM than the CD installation. The VFS warnings can be ignored.
Hope this can shed some light into this problem. Any comment will be welcome. Thanks.
I must (once again) correct myself. 16MB does not seem to be enough for an ftp-Install in SuSE 6.0. However, there's a workaround: Make sure, that you already partitioned your disk and created and initialized swap-space on your hard-disk. Now choose "ftp-Install" and wait for YaST to load. As soon as you see the progress-bar (Starting YaST), press CTRL+S when the bar is past the first half of the screen. You should now have a root-shell on console #2, where you can add swap space using the "swapon <Swap-Partition>" command. Verify this with the "free"-command. Now switch back to console one and press CTRl+Q to continue. YaST should start up fine now. Good luck! What's the minimum required memory?
I tried to install on a 2 meg machine and I had to go to an
old 1.1.59 kernel from slack
to get things running. The machine is also lacking a CDrom.

Strictly speaking, you should have at least 12 to do the install, and 8 to run with a 2.0 or 2.2 kernel. I have heard tales of x86 machines running a 2.2 kernel on 4 megs of RAM, but that's just asking for trouble. -- -=|JP|=- Jon Pennington | Atipa Linux Solutions -o) jpennington@atipa.com | Kansas City, MO /\\ 816-241-2641 x121 | http://www.atipa.com _\_V -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
