1. Please don't send HTML to mailing lists! 2. You really, really should create a new user for normal use. This would even solve your problem with starting KDE, since this is the default window manager for normal users (at least with my suse5.3). Please note that the user root has special privileges and is able to format the entire disk with a small command. Normal users cannot do this, they can only destroy their own files.
