[opensuse] /dev/devicemapper on leap 15
Hello, I test Leap 15 on various hardware and noticed that it seems to be necessary to use /dev/devicemapper everywhere in place of /dev/sdX, when no lvw is used I have never seen this before is this true? if so what is the use of devicemapper at this step thanks jdd -- http://dodin.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Any chance of a short summary? I too use multipath, but I don't think we've upgraded any multipathed server to leap15 yet. It's usually for storage area networks where a disk may be accessed via multiple different paths, for redundancy. It has no place in a default openSUSE install. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (23.8°C) http://www.dns24.ch/ - free dynamic DNS, made in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

You mean a machine accessing a single machine via two different cables and two chipsets? Also the hard disk has two sata ports? Wow. Makes a lot of sense, but I have not seen it. Not in my pay grade What device does Linux see then, /dev/what? -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 42.3 x86_64 "Malachite" at Telcontar)

Typically either with fibre, FoE or iSCSI. One storage host has two fibre HBAs, each connected to a fibre switch. The client has two fibres, each connected to a switch. A disk (e.g. an LVM logical volume) is now available over two separate paths. If an HBA fails in the storage host, or one of the fibre switches fail or an HBA fails in the client, there will still be a working path.
Wow. Makes a lot of sense, but I have not seen it. Not in my pay grade
You can set this up at home. 2nd hand fibre equipment is very cheap, but it's also easily done with ethernet. (if you want to play with it).

You can assign aliases, but otherwise /dev/mapper/<wwid>. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (20.4°C) http://www.dns24.ch/ - free dynamic DNS, made in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Wow, that's new.
This is apparently specific to Live ISO. I just booted Live GNOME on QEMU and multipath is active. "multipath -c /dev/sda" says "not valid multipath device" :) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
