cannot setup DSL/pppoe connect for no available etihernet connection (but I do have)
Hello. I am trying to setup a PPPoE connection and according to the manual, I setup my ethernet card (a built-in Interl card driven by e1000 on my Thinkpad) using a dummy address 192.168.22.99 and I made sure there are no default router (as described in SuSE 10 reference manual). And I made sure the network is up, the linght for my RJ-45 port is up, the connection icon in notify area (in Gnome) shows the network is up, ifconfig gives positive information and /etc/init.d/network tells me I do have eithernet connection now. Now I go to DSL setup (yast2), I choose PPPoE and I was told I need to select an eithernet connection, but, there is a drop-down selection list for which eithernet connection to use, with nothing in it. I suppose there should be something like "eth0" but the drop down list is empty. Simply empty. I tried various ways, e.g. configure LAN in this and that way and worked two hours, no progress. It seems DSL setup don't see my eithernet connection. I don't know if this is a FAQ but can any one give me a hint? Now I have a small router do the PPPoE dialing and serve my thinkpad with DHCP/NAT, but I wish to directly dial.

The first step is to check if you can access the modem. In the modem documentation you should find the default IP address of the modem. You should be able to ping the modem and get a response like ping <ip-Address> 64 bytes from <ip-Address>: icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=0.226 ms Where <ip-Address> = your modem address If that works you can then setup your DSL link using YaST otherwise you have a problem with either cabling or the network card is not setup correctly. you could try pinging your own address e.g. ping 192.168.22.99 and see if you get a response. Also when pinging your modem the LEDs should flash on both the ethernet port and the modem. -- Regards, Graham Smith

To use PPPoE from your PC you will have to make sure the modem is in "bridged mode" (Consult your modem handbook) before it will work. -- Regards, Graham Smith

Thank you for your help however I do have the knowledge required to test local connection etc. We do not use modem at all, I connect to my ICP using cat5 cable (with rj45) directly, and the ICP ask us to login by PPPoE. In this mode it's clearly written in the manual (SuSE reference manual) that I should setup a dummy address (actually any IP address will do) and make sure default route is empty, and again this is exactly what the ICP support staff told me (just like the manual told me). Again, there is no ip address for the modem to access and there is no modem at all (besides even if I have a modem, it must be in route (rather then 'bridge') mode to accept TCP connection). And I also tested with two computers to make sure at least LAN works (e.g. setup another computer with 192.168.22.100 and ping each other. Again, the router I bought works, meaning my eithernet card works. Again, the support staff come to my home only to show me that they can connect with their Windows notebook, and leave with "wish you good luck". Any closer help very much needed, thank you all!

If you have a router, why not set up the router to use PPPoe and talk to your provider?? It would be a much better way to do it.
Hello. I'm not good in english so im gonna be short at this. I've pass throu
this last saturday. :P
You need to start all the net services in Yast. In the section of the bottom
[I forgot the name :( ]
Try from there...
