Re: Installing advices
Hi again, Exscuse me for top answering this... Well, I've decided to get a second HDD and install SuSE on it. Then some new questions occured to me. Can I launch SuSE with LILO in this case with WinXP (NTFS) on the first HDD. Where should I put LILO? In the MBR (HDD 1) or on the root partition on HDD 2? If the second, will LILO be made to start and have the option to start WinXP as well? I cannot erase the WinXP, as this is an issue of license and regulations. This is a so called "employer computer" with certain benefits in taxation, I buy it via my job and have to follow certain rules for three yrs. I don't bother to much that SuSE might not be able to see the NTFS disk in this case. Any thoughts on this? Thanks, Thomas
----- Original Message ----- I'm about to install SuSE 8.0 on a machine with WinXP on NTFS. There is one disk with C: and D: and I'd like to use the D: for SuSE. I suppose I have to make WinXP not to see this D: in some way and only use C: for itselt, but how? I have PartitionMagic ver 3.0 and it claims to be able to manage NTFS, but when I want to install it, it says that it is unable to manage NTFS 5.0. The machine were pre-installed with WinXP and have just a rescue CD, wich will restore the two partitions and the NTFS file system. As I'm not changing something in the NTFS file system, can I use this PartitionMagic to shrink the Win partition, or is there another way to solve this? Or is this brand new excellent machine (Fujitsu-Siemens) waisted for using WinXP only? .

You can use either the WinXP bootloader or LILO. I use lilo with XP at home and it works fine. Here is what my lilo.conf looks like: boot=/dev/hda lba32 vga = normal # force sane state message=/boot/message menu-scheme=Wg:kw:Wg:Wg read-only prompt timeout=100 # End LILO global Section # image = /boot/bzImage-2.4.18.2 root = /dev/hda3 label = linux-2.4.18.2 image = /boot/memtest.bin label = memtest86 optional other = /dev/hda1 label = winxp
