The keyboard is a Logitech Cordless Desktop Pro. It's not IR, but
with
radio instead, and it has an adapter from PS/2 to AT to go in the back of the PC. I'm running SuSE 6.1, kernel 2.2.5, XFree86 3.3.3.1-20.
Now on to the problem(s): ---- When using the cursor keys to navigate through a document, etc., I get spurious numbers popping up at seemingly random intervals.
Say I was holding down the left cursor arrow to move to the start of a line (I could use home, but then I wouldn't have an example...). As the cursor is moving to the left a number 4 will often appear on the screen. If I move right I get a 6, up gives an 8, and down a 2. These numbers only appear when I'm pressing the cursor keys. I don't even have to keep my finger on
works the
key. Even
a single left arrow key press (for example) will produce a 4, instead of moving the cursor left. Sometimes I can go the whole line without a 4 appearing, and other times I'll get a 4 appearing every few characters. <snip>
How many keys on the keyboard? Are these the cursor keys on the numeric keypad? It sounds as if the signal for NumLock is being sent randomly. If so, it might also cause home, end, PgUp and PgDn to send a 7, 1, 9 or 3 intermittently (depending on the mapping), does it do this?
Thanks for your reply Tim.
It is a 105 key keyboard with an extra (normal, hard-type) Logitech key, and 12 soft-touch type keys. The keyboard is set up as: XkbModel "pc104" in XF86Config. Could this be a possible cause?
The Home, End, etc. keys also produce those numbers, I have just found > out. I am *not* using the numeric keypad for this. This is happening with the 'real' cursor/navigation ke4ys (that 4 appeared as I moved left to correct a spelling mistake).
Log into an available console and open a text editor, do a little typing being sure to use the problem keys. This will determine if it is a problem with X or between the keyboard and machine. If it still acts odd, try booting to another OS (got a dos floppy?) and run a similiar test. Then, if you can, try the same on different machines (with and without the PS/2 - AT adapter if you can). Try it in different locations (this is to determine if there is some kind of ambient interference where you are). Take a look around for things that might cause interference, things like cordless phones, cellular, even your monitor should be suspect. If it continues to do this in every case then there is only one thing left, it's a flakey keyboard and probably needs to be replaced.
That's about all I can think of.
Tim

Hi Tim and all, Sorry about the time delay before replying to this. I had to wait until I had a decent excuse to reboot the computer - in this case a kernel upgrade to 2.2.14. The main reason for the upgrade wasn't to see if it would fix the keyboard problem, but because I was bored at the time ;-) BTW, the new kernel doesn't make any difference anyway. This gave me the opportunity to test the keyboard in NT and also on my laptop. Tim Duggan wrote:

This happens whether in X or at the console, logged in as any user. It does it at the command line as well.

Works fine under NT (using PS/2 - AT adapter for the keyboard, as under linux). Maybe this was a known bug with the keyboard and Logitech produced a software fix in the Windows driver?
(with and without the PS/2 - AT adapter if you can). Try it in
I also tried plugging the keyboard and mouse (both cordless) into my ancient Toshiba laptop. The keyboard appears to work fine in Windows 3.11 and DOS. More importantly (?) it also works under Linux of the laptop. The laptop doesn't run X, so is console only, but I have observed no such problems at all. The laptop is running SmallLinux, with a kernel of 2.0.0 (? - according to uname -a).

Well, the receiver is sitting on top of the telephone/network socket... but this is the same position as in all the other tests, and it is more than 15" away from any other electical equipment, except for the 'phone. I originally thought this might be the problem, but I don't think the socket will produce anything with a high enough frequency. I have also tried putting the receiver further away from electrical equipment - no effect.
every case then there is only one thing left, it's a flakey keyboard
It's a possiblity, but considering it works (read: appears to work) on three other OS/computer combinations, this seems unlikely. Also, I know other people on this list are using the same keyboard. Do any of you that are using a Logitech Cordless Desktop Pro on SuSE 6.1 experience any similar problems. You know, it could even be my processor. I know it's flackey enough (Cyrix P150+) and I'm sure it's knackered or got a bug because seti@home just segfaults, just as it and Prime95 did on NT (except on NT it brought the entire OS down with it ;-> ). It would be a nice fix, though, to just send it back and get a replacement :) I think I might contact Logitech tech support and see what they have to say.
That's about all I can think of.
Whatever help you can give is welcome... ;-) Sorry for the lengthy post, and the excess smileys at the end...
