KDE 3.3.0 on SuSE 9.1 here. I am experiencing a hang at the splash screen again after logging in to KDE. This time, I've done a bit of debugging and found that the culprit is kcminit. In the /opt/kde3/bin/startkde script, there is a line: LD_BIND_NOW=true kdeinit +kcminit +knotify If I change this line to skip kcminit as follows, then I can log in just fine: LD_BIND_NOW=true kdeinit +knotify Manually running "kdeinit +kcminit" in a kconsole window shows a bunch of messages, and I confirmed that it does not complete and return to the shell prompt. I have to ctrl-C to abort it. So, 2 questions: 1. Just what does kcminit do? I don't seem to have lost any obvious functionality without it? 2. Why might kcminit be hanging on my machine? -Ti

Dear Ti Kan, It seems you have a habit of crossposting between suse-linux-e and suse-kde. So far I count 8 threads out of 11 total where at least your initial message was crossposted. I do not know if you are the only one, but somehow you attracted my attention. Although a question about SuSE/KDE is not per se wrongly posted in suse-linux-e, it is at least better posted in suse-kde. For descriptions of mailinglists see http://www.suse.de/en/private/support/online_help/mailinglists/index.html May I ask you kindly to post a message in the appropriate list? Also there is a line in the signature of each message posted to suse-kde that reads: "Please do not cross-post to suse-linux-e". I would appreciate it if you would not cross-post again. Cheers, Leen
