I'm getting a very regular General Protection error, on the following system ( set up to be a mail and www server runing X ). I've reformated and reinstalled twice, with more limited package selection each time. No difference was noted. MotherBoard : ABIT LX6 CPU : Pentium II 233Mhz Memory : 64 Meg SDRAM Hard Drive : ATAPI IDE Mitsumi 4gig CD-ROM : Mitsumi 24x EIDE ( set as slave ) Video Card : Matrox Millenium (MGA) Network Card : SMC8432T EtherPower PCI Mouse : PS/2 Keyboard : Standard 101 key OS : SUSE LINUX 5.1 December 1997 installed from CD-ROM There are no other devices. I do have the i/o devices ( Keyboard, Monitor, Mouse ) connected to a Belkin omniview 4 port electronic switch. After every few hours, the system gets semi locked. It responds to <alt><Function key> commands, but not to <cntrl><alt><del>. <enter> at any screen, except login prompt gives the following. # general protection error: 0000 cpu : 0 eip : 0010:[<00124c207>] eflags : 00010216 eax: 724f2f6c ebx: 00000302 ecx: 0346cd90 edx: 0000020a esi: 00000302 edi: 00000108 ebp: 00000400 esp: 00851e14 ds: 0018 es: 0018 fs: 002b gs: 002b ss: 0018 Process bash ( pid: 5668, processnr :38 stackpage:08150000 Stack: 0000032b 03F1030 00000400 0000023B 00000237 0000013A 0012545E 00000301 0000023b 000004000 0000023b 03F1CC38 001d86fc 0000023b 0000001 0015BE8 00000301 0000023B 000004000 0000000000000007 03C08000 00000 23B 00000400 CALL TRACE : [<0012545E7>] [<0014BEA87>] [<0015CWFB7>] [<001115CBC8>] [< MORE SIMILAR LINES>] CODE : 39 38 75 84 66 39 58 04 75 1E 39 68 20 74 22 56 E8 77 F9 FF #################################### Laszlo -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

Hello everyone!!! I just want to remind everybody that summer is here, with high air-conditioner loads on the power companies. If you are experiencing problems such as this one, the first thing to check is low line voltage. I'm not claiming that it is the source of this particular problem, but it is the first thing to check in the summer. That is unless you have a UPS system going. Look at the specifications on your power supply, and then monitor your wall socket voltage with a digital meter, or an accurate analog model. zentara -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
I have the system connected to an APC Smart UPS 2200. But I do have a few routers, annexes and modem banks connected to it also. I may be reaching the capacity limit of the ciruit. Laszlo On Sun, 31 May 1998, zentara wrote:

Are the numbers the same every time or do they cange? Did you compile this kernel? What does /var/log/messages say about the crashes? Did the crashes happen around the same time after switching the computer on? Shorter on warm days or with the sun shining on your computer chassis? If yes, it really looks like a heat problem. Is your processor cooled properly? Does it's cooling fan turn without squeaky/grinding/etc noises? Does the power supply's fans turn OK? Try it with an open chassis (and some extra ventilators, probably houshold ones ... you *must* ensure a good circulation!), if that helps, it's a heat problem. Also at the time of the crash find out how hot the CPU is (the Cooler may probably not be attached properly). There are stripes aviable that change colour with temperature, they often give good indications. Are you 110ure your memory chip(s) is/are OK (no, works under Win does not count, Windows does not use the memory to the full potential)? Try with one half of the chips if possible, or with (a) completely different one(s). Read /usr/src/linux/Documentation/oops-tracing.txt on how to report this crash. Reinstalling won't solve many problems under Linux and often does not pay, and *this* is definitely not a problem with packages. It's either the kernel or more probably a hardware problem ... -Wolfgang -- PGP 2 welcome: Mail me, subject "send PGP-key". If you've nothing at all to hide, you must be boring. I'll answer below. Since the system refused to stay up, I installed an older kernel verion of Debian, which seems to be stable. But I'd much rather be using the SUSE distribution. See below for the continued blow by blow commentary. Laszlo On Sun, 31 May 1998, Wolfgang Weisselberg wrote:

The case is located directly in the path of the air conditioner. And the system crashed repeated at night. There seems to enough air circulation since I had a secondary cooling fan installed on the system.
Is your processor cooled properly? Does it's cooling fan turn without squeaky/grinding/etc noises? Does the power supply's fans turn OK?
All fans working, actually the power supply vents are the coolest of any or the many systems running here.

I will run it with an open case, Since installing the network card, prior to the OS. The case has been on.

Machine never had windows on it, but the memory seems fine running the debian distributuion. It has been up for almost 20 hours now.
Read /usr/src/linux/Documentation/oops-tracing.txt on how to report this crash.
Going off to RTM.

Anyone get this working with S.u.S.E. 5.1? Maybe I'm just blind tonight, but I can't find the rc.local file. Dana -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
Hello, I have a little time in Linux (6 months) and just completed my nite class of Intro to Unix, with that I would like to ask some questions. I have two different boxes here, one Linux RH 5.0(b) and just installed BSD 2.2.6 for the experience on my other machine. RH 5.0 provided a GUI from X, in root, called _netcfg_ that enabled me to log into my Netcom ISP which does not provide a static IP for me. It allowed entries for user name, password, primary and secondary DNS numbers, all of which Netcom asks you to use. Seeing that I log in fine, I am dying to find the location of the script it wrote to study for my learning. I also want to see if I can use the script on my other versions of Linux / Unix that I intend on trying. Any ideas. -- Bill Schoolcraft PO Box 210076 San Francisco CA 94121 <A HREF="http://www.netcom.com/~wiliweld"><A HREF="http://www.netcom.com/~wiliweld</A">http://www.netcom.com/~wiliweld</A</A>> -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
Redhat's netcfg is a painless way to set up ppp for the new redhat user. Unfortunately using it teaches you nothing about how to set up ppp. There just isn't any substitute: <A HREF="ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/PPP-HOWTO"><A HREF="ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/PPP-HOWTO</A">ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/PPP-HOWTO</A</A>> Bill Schoolcraft wrote:
