Been gone awhile, got a couple questions...

Hi all, I have been using Linux for a while (slackware 3.0, then skipped around btwn RedHat, SuSE, Mandrake, Debian,SuSE, RedHat, you get the idea), but still am not a 'guru' or even an expert 'user' by any means. I'm on the brink of pre-ordering SuSE 7.3 for use on my home LAN, but I have a couple concerns I was hoping y'all on the list could address. I've browsed the newsgroup and the suse-linux-e list archives, and noticed a lot of grumbling about the speed, or lack of, of yast2. I take it that yast2 overall has gotten a lot better, because around 7.0 or so, speed was the least of my concerns w/ it. If I were to stick SuSE 7.3 on a modest machine (Panasonic P2-300 laptop w/ 64MB RAM w/ dead display) for use as a network file/print server, will I be able to reasonably use yast2 over an ssh connection? The reason I ask is that I have read complaints about it's speed on a P3-800 w/ buku ram, which has me worried!! My other concern is how much horsepower do I need to run it on a desktop? Right now my dedicated 'test' box that I don't have to share w/ the rest of the family is a Celeron 266 w/ 64MB RAM, onboard sound, onboard video (8MB ATI Rage), 3.2GB HD, etc. Supported, functionally, but would bumping up my RAM to 128 or even 256 make the system 'useable'? Right now, with this system, running RH 7.1 and XFCE 3.8.8, even Opera can cause it to really thrash for a while (I tend to have 5-10 windows open inside Opera at a time), and KDE2 was just horrid :( Thanks in advance, Monte __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Hello, Monte. If you plan to use the laptop as a headless server, it might behove you to stick with Yast1 via Telnet/SSH, or put Webmin onto it. As far as a desktop machine goes, I am running a PII-333, 128MB RAM and most things hum along quite nicely. Even the 3D stuff works quite well, but the GF2MX card might have something to do with that. BUT, Yast2 is still dog slow. I still use Yast or Webmin over Yast2. Yast2 is pretty, I'll grant you that, but I find other tools more useful... for now. As for memory, do yourself a favour and buy some more. Crucial (branded, lifetime warranty, free shipping if you catch them in a good mood) have 128MB modules for about $18 a piece. And it is safe to put PC100/PC133 memory into a PC66 box, just try to match it up. You can probably find it even cheaper elsewhere, I just happen to favour Crucial http://www.crucial.com. Bye for now, Stuart. -----Original Message----- <snip> If I were to stick SuSE 7.3 on a modest machine (Panasonic P2-300 laptop w/ 64MB RAM w/ dead display) for use as a network file/print server, will I be able to reasonably use yast2 over an ssh connection? In general bump the RAM, especially while it is so cheap. Don't worry about it getting cold from under-use, just run netscape once in a while :) As for yast2 it will probably run like a legless dog. With yast1 you should be fine. KDE2 is another machine consumer built with zero regard for anyone running a low-power machine. WM's like windowmaker are much more suitable in this case. -- Regards Cliff
