Re: [SuSE Linux] ISP connects but can't ping, ftp, browse, etc.
Depending on your ISP's setup you might not be able to fully configure your ppp-connection from yast. When I configured my ISP, I had to manually add a few lines to the chat-script and ppp-options file afterwards. The reason was, that my ISP's server required some special options, like it wouldn't start the PAP process until it had received a ppp command. This might also be the case for your ISP. Try running 'tail -f /var/log/messages' on another tty when you try to go online, and activate 'debug' for ppp. Then you can see what the server writes, and what your machine responds. For me it was quite a success when I finally got it working. Sincerely Ole Kofoed Hansen On Fri, 20 Nov 1998, Aaron Prohaska wrote:
Steve, I have been a little slow responding to email lately. I am trying to get over being sick. I am still very interested in making Linux connect from the command line. I haven't had time lately to play with it much, but I do every once in a while. I am still having the problem of the modem doing everything it is supposed to, but then when I use ifconfig to see what has happend it looks like I am not connected. This is after listening to the modem dial and talk to my ISP, so everything sounds normal, just that it is not connecting. In your example below is the nameserver the same thing as primary and secondary DNS? That is taking my knowledge of windows and using it here. One of the stupid problems I am having is that I have changed some of my ppp files and now yast won't touch them. Should I just forget about using yast and do everything by hand? One thing I have also thought about doing is formating the hard drive and starting from scratch. Maybe I have messed with the system enough so that is would be easier that way.

Yes, I had to put a 0:0 on the options line in Yast ppp too. But what I really want to know is why has not SuSE put some USA isp's in the database that Yast uses??? Might save their customers some hassle. Especially since SuSE is actively marketing the USA. Of all the issues plagueing new users, ppp has to be the most e-mailed, usenet-ed, irc'ed, ... I wish RH, SuSE, Caldera, ... would put ppp a little higher on their priority lists. It's been a while since I screwed with dun under win... but if win can make it "seem easier", why the hell can't SuSE? (Don't get me wrong, I like SuSE.) (No flames intended. I agree, DUN should be easier.
