[MAIL SERVER]What will happen when I remove sendmail from a 7.1 install?
Hey all, I have a web server that does not need email, so I'd like to completely remove any MTA for security purposes. I'm concerned about the possibility of freaking out things like cron though. What is the best thing to do in this situation? Remove sendmail? Leave on but make sure it's not running? Shut down all SMTP services(how would I do that anyway?)? CRON won't freak out, you just won't get your mails. Why not instead
configure it so that your MTA listens only on localhost? Then
firewall the port? This should provide fairly good security.

I think Unix needs an MTA present. It does not however need to be running all the time. I would go ahead and leave it installed. I would make sure that you didn't run it as a daemon. - v -- Victor R.
