[SuSE Linux] new motherboard, onboard agp, and sound
I'm fishing here. I figure someone might know, it dosn't hurt to ask. I just got an Alton M-590 pc-100 motherboard. It's got a SiS 6326 AGP 8meg video onboard. I can't get it to setup right with xf86config, nor XF86Setup. XF86Setup will just give me blank screens, and xf86config will let me startx, but only in vga, 320x320 (or some ridiculous resolution), and the screen is HUGE and useless. The xterm fills the screen. Even with all the lowest vga settings. Am I wasting my time trying to get this onboard AGP working? Can I slip my old trident PCI card back in there, and have both work? The SiS driver for win95 and NT4 both seem to work. Any Clues? Zantera , I got the same exact problem with an asus p5 motherboard and Diamond stealth a50 AGP with 8 meg of ram. Same exact results you have gotte. Posted a message a day or to ago , also posted to Lenz , havent heard back any thing , the suse techs suggested upgrading to xf86frr 3.3.3 , but I hear there are prblems , related to the compliler lib used , I can dig for the message if you like , I'll get to it tomorrow , most likely. I think its related to either the agp interfaqce or the sis chip. I know that 3.3.3 suports the sis chip , but there is no mention of the AGP card interface. Please let me know if you get it working , and how you did it. I'll probebly upgrade to 3.3.3 , but thats an uphill battle for me , I am new and raw to linux , all this rpm and gz is new. Good luck Samy At 04:26 PM 12/13/1998 -0500, you wrote:

Hi, As I write this I'm downloading Xsvga-3.3.3.3.rpm. I followed links from Alton's site, to SiS, who recommended SUSE!!!! I'll be trying them out tonight, I'll let you know how they do. - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A</A>> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A</A>>

that godawful resolution is 320x200, with a virtual screen (which probably isn't working) of 320x204. :) i saw it plenty when trying to get linux up on this box... i don't know how to get your online agp working, but you should be able to plug that old trident pci back in and have it work fine...maybe you could get a little switch box for your monitor, so that you can switch between the trident for linux, and the sis for windows, without having to mess swapping monitor cables and such when you wanted the other card. -derek "Winter's hateful battle raging on, Rocket's flying towards the glowing sun, Pollution fills the land, the air, and sea, Man prepares to meet his destiny...." I'll do that as a last resort. The SiS website said go to SuSe.com and get xsvga for the Xfree 3.3.3 that just came out. So, I guess I'll struggle with replacing X first. The new Xfree3.3.3.3 just was loaded up onto the ftp site 3 days ago, good timing. :-) - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A</A>> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A</A>>
