Unless the kernal is custome or vanilla from kernal.org I would not touch it without yast online update. The last time I updated a kernal it was with YOU separately from updating the other programs with a subsequent reboot. Depends on what the patch is called, if it's a text file or .bz2 or .gz and what paths are included - we'd need to see the patch header. The soundest advice is to make a copy of the kernel sources cp -dpR linux-x.y.z-a linux-x.y.z-a1, edit Makefile to adjust EXTRAVERSION to reflect the new name, that way you don't touch your working setup.
