mantel 2.4.3 kernel, SMP /1Gb
I installed a 2.4.3 suse kernel on some of our machines here (SMP support, 4G mem limit) The kernel works fine on single CPU machines, installing the same kernel on an SMP machine with 1G of ram causes the kernel to hand immeditaley after freeing unsused kernel memory (just before it sais INIT version XXXX ....) Doing an append="MEM=768M" in lilo makes the thing work just fine. Anyone outthere with an SMP machine w 1G (or more) who has got that kernel (or a later one, at least one with the knfsd/reiser patch) working with 1G ? Hi; In general the Kernel in the mantel directory if that is what you are refering to are not official :~) The memory issues I have seen in the past could be due to the way the M/B handles memory, like if you have a RAID card with 256 Megs plus the Physical memory I have seen issues. What you might like to try is the 2.4.4 also on the FTP and compile it with BigMEM support. Are you using any Adaptec imbedded SCSI controllers? I also saw a hang once with the above on SMP....that was wierd, but I have seen a _lot_ of changes in the kernel notes of versions of the Adaptec AIC 7xxxx driver and I am thinking something is not right with SMP and peculiar issues with that driver.....but my hangs were when the sequencer code was downloaded, not where you describe. Hope this helps, we found that systems with less than 4 Procs less than 4 Gigs, and not needing more than 1024 processes actually perform better on SuSE 2.2.19, go figure :~) This may all change now in 2.4.4 and remember now we had Reiser F/S Regards, Jon On Wed, 9 May 2001, Gerhard den Hollander wrote:
