These questions may sound trivial, but , is the system swapping alot? If so, is the swap partition close to the /usr partition ? ie, try to prevent the heads from seeking too much. I don't think fragmentation is an issue at this point for you. Run top or something to see what processes are taking cpu resources. Running the cd player with X windows off , does that help? Have you tried a different CDplayer? workman/workbone xcd or something like that?
The system isn't swapping at all. Swap is on a separate partition adjacent to /usr, and the system is fairly new-installed, so filesystem shouldn't be too fragmented, just as you say. When I run top, no process is eating CPU (except of course X when I run that, but that is not in excess either). I tried running the following: xmcd (motif CD player), workman and workbone. All with similar results... As I mentioned, the jerkiness seem to escalate when I move the mouse (PS/2, IRQ12) a lot, which give me reason to think it's some kind of interrupt problem... No idea how to fix it though. Btw. is it good or bad to have CD as SCSI id 0? It seems my controller wants CD on this ID to be able to boot. The reason I ask is that I see many people have the CD as highest ID (in my case that would be 2, as I have 3 SCSI devices connected)...
