This was in the November 2008 copy of Linux Journel and I had never seen such an article previously. I had seen threads in this newslist a couple of years ago but never in a published mag before. I am not proclaiming the sky is falling or anything like it, but am quite curious if there is anything to the article that one should take seriously. Given the 'deal' with MS was about 2 years ago, we would still have 3 years of 'safety', but if there is anything to the article, you don't want to wait until the lawyers start sending out their little notices either. I personally hope Novell was/is smart enough to trump any 'Aces' that M$ might think it has with this deal. SuSE certainly is my choice of OS. I know several people who swore off SuSE when that happened, and AFAIK, they have all migrated back.

Personally, I could care less. Even IF M$ is able to sue, they can never remove linux from those of us who use it and don't care about all that software patent nonsense. If nothing else, I will use it or one of the BSDs and NOT WinDoZe, so they wouldn't lose anything anyway.

Just my 2 cents..... Larry, I can assure you that no matter what, M$ will never ever get a penny from me for *any* of their crappola. They will find suing me is like trying to squeeze water out of a desert rock that has been baked in a 1000 degree furnace for a month of sundays. I just don't want Novell to be 'drug' under by M$ like so many other firms have been in the past.

I shall not be surprised if Microsoft, like GM, Lehman Bros., AIG, Fanny & Freddy, etc., is quivering upon its death bed three years hence, scarcely able to drive the dagger it has honed into the belly of its foe, Linux.

I only hope that due to my age and health that my dying wish is granted....to be able to hold the handle of the dagger...the one pointed at M$ that bounces off of Linux when they try to plunge it in. :)

Though I have no issues with Linux Magazine - I do like the European Linux Magazine with teh DVD better - I fail to see why this is even being discussed today. The article was from two years ago. While Richard may have seen it in "his" november 2008 Linux Journal, I don't see it in mine. What has Novell done with this deal? Well, for starters, they've made certian that the 800-lb (362 kg) gorilla is at least now working with openSUSE and SLED. There's better SMB interoperability, there's better mono support, and moonlight. I'd say it is a good thing. (Did anyone see the Linux Journal edition of User Friendly? - It does have a funny cartoon where "Steve" is being told that they are selling $100M in enterprise Linux support licenses. Sure there is, Michael. The real Linux Journal, known in North America as Linux Pro Journal, is head and shoulders a better, more interesting magazine. And personally, I find Linux Format the best of them all.

It. Was. Not. It was in Novemver of 06 written by then-editor Nicholas Petreley, who no longer works for LJ...which is why the magazine is good again. When someone decided to push the devs to include ZMD(Zenworks Management Daemon) into 10.1 Beta 3(you know, after the new feature freeze) and then released 10.1 with a broken package manager. Definitely not one of SuSE's finer points. (because Novell bought a couple of companies and decided to integrate everything). However, zypper evolved from that, and it's a really fast system now. I only installed 10.1 on 1 machine. 10.1 also had broken support for Old World Macs, so I stuck with 10.0 until 10.2 came out with the fix(the kernel had been broken).
