[S.u.S.E. Linux] ftp-download in batch mode
Hello Everybody, I want to download packages from ftp-servers. (i.e. ftp.suse.com) in batch mode. I have tried "ftp <command.file" but I can't get past the user/password request. when I press return on the keyboard, the job continues running. I do not like to set the alarm clock to 2am (phone company charges less then), when "at" can handle this much better. Ideas? Jürgen ps: i know about "rpm -U ...", works fine, but I want the package for the second system as well. -- ========================================== __ _ Jürgen Braukmann e-mail: brauki@cww.de | / / (_)__ __ ____ __ Tel: 0201-743648 dk4jb@db0qs.#nrw.deu.eu | / /__/ / _ \/ // /\ \/ / ========================================== /____/_/_//_/\_,_/ /_/\_\ -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

Well xftp enables you to select multiple files for download. As do other gui front-ends for ftp. -Dee W.D.McKinney (Dee) -=- deem@wdm.com No claim to fame, just saved by Grace. -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

Hi Juergen! Looking in my SuSE manual it says to login as ftp. When I want to d/l anything there I use Midnight Commander with "cd <A HREF="ftp@ftp.suse.de">ftp://ftp@ftp.suse.de</A>">ftp@ftp.suse.de</A">ftp://ftp@ftp.suse.de</A</A>>" this lets me do what ever I want. I'll admit that I've not tried batch file d/l'ing so I don't know if this is what you want. I hope this helps! Hi Jim, as I mentioned, I've found the solution. Never the less, all other tips are usefull as well. did not thought that "mc" is like that. Did not know until a few days ago that "mc" can browse disks as well. ;-)) But I wanted _realy_ download at night when phone rates are cheap. (furthermore: my ISP does not charge time between uhh 0:00 and 6:00 am). But I did not want to use the alarmclock. ;-) If you create the file .netrc in your home directrory, with entrys like: default user anonymous password email@adress.de these defaults are used when you start ftp. (no other way to get behind that password request of ftp) I now can use: ftp < script.ftp with script.ftp like: open ftp.suse.com cd /suse_update get whatever/you/want /were/ever/it/goes/to get anything_else .... quit I start this with "at", that makes it a nice method after all. fetched ghostscript update last night ;-)) cheers Jürgen -- ========================================== __ _ Jürgen Braukmann e-mail: brauki@cww.de | / / (_)__ __ ____ __ Tel: 0201-743648 dk4jb@db0qs.#nrw.deu.eu | / /__/ / _ \/ // /\ \/ / ========================================== /____/_/_//_/\_,_/ /_/\_\ -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
Hi, this is a very good message I read in this list, as I have the same working to do here. Since July 01, the night long distance telephone tariff will be only 300f that of daytime (from middlenight 0:00 to 7:00 AM), I am sure the new USENET-like network will be started since then. The skill mentioned this message will be adopted. It's very hard to do this on Windows 95/NT, even on NT 4.0 Server. The worst thing on Windows NT is: it missed the support for scripting language, like mentioned in this message. VB is good for develop GUI, but for sys admin like this it's tough, or nearly impossible. O'Reilly has a Perl resource Kit for Win32, I don't if the kits can do this for Win NT. Best wishes, Frederic

My apologies for not getting in on the start of this thread but a solution is very easy - use ncftp, not ftp. ncftp, by default, enters in "anonymous" and your email address for username/password when it enters a site. Also, if you know the complete path of the file, you can enter it in URL format and ncftp will download it. Example: to download the file "app.tar.gz" from ftp.foo.com, type this: ncftp <A HREF="ftp://ftp.foo.com/pub/app.tar.gz"><A HREF="ftp://ftp.foo.com/pub/app.tar.gz</A">ftp://ftp.foo.com/pub/app.tar.gz</A</A>> and ncftp will download it for you. ncftp also has a great interactive mode . . . it is one of my favorite apps . . . of course, it is included in the SuSE distro . . . - mikeh

Upps, again. I think someone mentioned that, but I was _to much_ fixed on ftp to get the real Idea. ;-( Jürgen Anyway: this discussion shows the flexibility of Linux and it's supporters! -- ========================================== __ _ Jürgen Braukmann e-mail: brauki@cww.de | / / (_)__ __ ____ __ Tel: 0201-743648 dk4jb@db0qs.#nrw.deu.eu | / /__/ / _ \/ // /\ \/ / ========================================== /____/_/_//_/\_,_/ /_/\_\ -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
