Re: [SuSE Linux] linux on dell poweredge 2300
Hello Ian, Thanks for your prompt reply. When I mentioned to our SuSE 6.1 guru that somebody has installed RedHat Linux on Dell 2300 but that I can not even get SuSE 6.1 installation started he jumped up and promised to check the problem on the spot. What a nice guy I thought and went home. I just read his e-mail and he has indeed resolved the problem ! The problem of starting the installation has nothing to do with the Hot Swap or with the non partitioned, fresh disks; it is just that our Dell 2300 has 1 GB of DRAM and this makes SuSE 6.1 linuxrc fails somehow; it does not see any (extended ?) memory at all. Our guru typed boot: linux root=initdisk.gz mem=???M at the LILO boot prompt (??? being, for example 512 MB, to stay on the safer side). And it works. When you contract starts, and if SuSE 6.1 is still around, you better keep this trick in mind. Anyway, thanks Ian, and special thanks to Staffan Ohlsson at the E.S.R.F. Petri "Ian M. Moore" wrote:
Actually I'm still waiting for my contract to start and then I will really tackle this problem. Actually you can't hot swap with linux but it will run with linux. I haven't done a search on the net lately but there should be more info since dell is now shipping with linux! Good Luck Ian
