I have been using MoneyDance for years, but my queries to their support
email address have not been answered regarding being able to upgrade at
their upgrade price.
I was going to run a kmymoney test, but for some reason, when I click in
import/QIF, no dialog box comes up.
I'm currently running KDE 3.2.3.
When I went to import a QIF file in GNU Cash (1.8.7), it failed with a
parse error, "data for number or date does not match a known format".
In any case, I was curious to see if anyone had used both GNUCash and
kmymoney and could render an opinion. Or, if someone had converted from
MoneyDance to either.

Dear Mr. Feldman, ~ just a remark ~ used to use Money Dance which i quite liked. Although, not so automatic & without benefit of automatic contra-ledger posting, i do, now, prefer, to keep accounts using OpenOffice spread-sheets. best wishes ___________

Just a comment. I've been using MoneyDance for a year and I find their support to be very good. Are you on their mailing list? Lots of help there. As for the upgrade, not sure there is even a charge but I don't know what version you are running. They now have an 'update' feechur that will automatically looks for updates and retreive them. I'll be interested in your findings....

Gnucash lmports QIF/OFX/QFX formats. I have burned my fingers a couple of times on Moneydance. I started using it years ago when I switched over to Linux. However when I needed them they were "out of business" so I changed to Gnucash. Very good and very easy to use and the support......Boy you can't beat Derik Atkins , at times you have an answer back even before it appears on the list! Someone mention it is to American.....maybe , but there is nothing American in my setup. You change it to the way you like. It also has a separate business setup what I really like. I wasn't referring to the setup, I was referring to the "single column" book keeping form, that's common in the US, but not here. We use blended double column. Not that it really matters, GNUcash definately looks much better and has lots of good features ... but then my taste comes from the fact I got my education out of a buisness college, and I tend to want my "private" book keeping in accordance.

Sorry but I don't understand what you mean here. What is a blended double column? Gnucah uses double entry bookkeeping what is used all over the world, in fact IMO if you don't use that , you're not having a propper accountancy system.

Moneydance imports, QIF, OFC (??) and OFX. There is also an extension for US tax support that does TFX (don't know if other countries would use it ...). I have not used it - just know it is there. I presume it can be used in the various popular tax tools (using Wine on Linux of course!) I Rich On Wed, 2004-12-29 at 12:46 -0500, Paul W. Abrahams wrote:

You can get a $15 upgrade - I did. It is painless and fast. The only issue I might expect would be the time of year and the Moneydance support being low on staffing. The Moneydance website states "If you purchased Moneydance on CD or no longer have your license key, please send an email to support@moneydance.com ." I did this, received an e-mail and paid the money (I forget if it was via a website or not). My personal opinion is that KmyMoney and GnuCASH are ok .... but Moneydance seems far better. l last looked at them when I did the MD upgrade in Feb '04 ... At the time I had upgraded from Fedora Core 1 to SuSe 9.1 and rebuilt my system. I needed the full S/W for the install. The MD support response was fast - could have been perfect timing - I sent a mail, 10 mins later (I download mail every 5 mins) I had a response, provided the update info and 15 mins later I was back up. KMyMoney looks quite good, in my opinion ... a comfortable simplified bookkeeping engine. GNUCash, is somewhat a bit too "american" to my taste, not the type of book keeping I'm used too, neither is KMyMoney but it's better. That's my opinion though ... but the last time I tested either, they were still too much a beta, to be really useful. My 2¢ worth, Örn

Hi Jerry, while I do not have any opinion in all these apps, I for sure know that sometimes SuSE (at least it happens with 9.0 and 9.1) opens some windows under the current one. And if such a window does not have a task-bar appearance, the impression is that no window was open. Taking that in account, you may try again with KMyMoney. Just when you select the import dialog, try to move around the main window to see if the box is not underneath. Cheers Sunny -- Get Firefox http://www.spreadfirefox.com/?q=affiliates&id=10745&t=85

Before I started using MoneyDance ( not too long ago :) ) I've tried kMyMoney. The only version that somewhat worked for me was 0.6.4 (I had to upgrade the KDE for that) It has a very bad implemented file import feature. That was my primary reason to give it up and move to MoneyDance.
When I went to import a QIF file in GNU Cash (1.8.7), it failed with a parse error, "data for number or date does not match a known format".
Frankly speaking I would not waste time on KMyMoney... If you decided to "abandon" MoneyDance probably you should start looking at GNUCash (I did not like it) it looks like this is the only alternative on Linux. If you'll find anything else I would glad to hear it :)
In any case, I was curious to see if anyone had used both GNUCash and kmymoney and could render an opinion. Or, if someone had converted from MoneyDance to either.
It may not be a difficult move - the MoneyDance has an QIF export feature, but I did not play with GNUCash "import druid" enough to see if it imports data properly. Good luck, Dmitry

I'd not taken a look at the version of KMyMoney that shipped with 9.2 till now. It's lacking in some features found on the other 2, plus there's NO printing support. It looks like it would work well for some users, however. Just my .02: I recently installed Kmymoney from SuSE 9.2 DVD and Gnucash from same. Tried to import .qif file into both. Both seemed to show Transfer transactions twice and took a lot of hand-work to get to resemble the Quicken registers the file(s) came from. I could never get Gnucash to stop posting old transfers between accounts twice, so never got balances to match with the previous. Probably the best thing would have been to start with clean accounts and assign "starting balances" equal to the last balance in the old accounts, not try to import old transactions. Kmymoney did much the same, but after going through each transaction I was able to get it to match the old quicken accounts. This mattered to me because I was trying to move away from using quicken under vmware, and wanted to keep account histories available, without having to go back to vmware/quicken to look up old transactions. I found Kmymoney ok to get used to and easy to edit transactions as I was learning how it wanted them inputted, but did not like having to use mouse to correct transaction dates, or posting dates if not posted on date of transaction, a minor annoyance. I had one major upset where my entire account file was replaced with an empty file, that is, all data disappeared and my only option seems to be to re-import and re-create from scratch, not a very inviting prospect. On the very positive side, I emailed the support email and received a response within a few hours from Thomas Baumgart, giving me some direction to try, and while they did not return my data (and no, I had not availed myself of the backup function yet...I am a slow learner in this regard) he did point me to some .qif import functions that have greately simplified re-importing, to wit, first time all dates were refused and assigned date of import. Took hours to correct all of those by hand. Import function allows to specify a different date format from the default, and re-import last night kept all dates. Much easier, will be far less hand correcting to do. Ok, so I have rambled on to .04. My reluctance to stray from vmware/quicken had been the ability to sync accounts with palm and do away with written register. Currently vmware seems not to be playing nice with USB ports, can't find my palm, so I am finding now that if nothing will sync with palm, then all applications are now open so can avoid having to "boot" into vmware to do checking account stuff. I've also been using MoneyDance for years. When I paid for the discounted upgrade, I was emailed a new license key. With 382, you can download the update extension, which will download the latest *.jar files. In Linux, you still have to copy the file into your Moneydance directory. I don't know if it is fully automated under other OS's. I am currently at the 383 build and still quite happy with Moneydance. Barry
I've been using Quicken for years and have found that each new release has become more burdened with gingerbread features and harder to use. Plus, of course, Intuit's hard-line anti-Linux attitudes. So I'd dearly love to switch over to a Linux accounting program, be it Gnucash or Moneydance. But I don't want to give up Quicken's ability to import information from other sources. I understand that both Moneydance and Gnucash can import QFX and QIF files, which means that I can download data from my bank and credit card companies. But I'm wondering about the ability to import stock quotes. Can either Moneydance or Gnucash do that? Paul
