I am successfully sharing a SuSE 8.0 hosted file system + printer from a windows ME box via SAMBA. But I do "fight" with WinME, so would like to upgrade it to WinXP :) Without going into the merits or demerits of the idea (Heheh!) can someone give me a "yay" or "nay" as to whether WinXP will (like WinME) talk simply and effectively to a Samba server? Aside: Having (in the past) "managed" WinNT 4.0 systems, I suspect I would e.g. also use the opportunity to upgrade the file system on the Windows Box to NTFS... which would (presumably) be transparent as far as Samba is concerned? Then there's the authorization mechanism, which I presently set up (to work) via "smbpasswd"? But, simply: Any known show-stoppers with such a general scheme? I can only afford (financially) the UPGRADE route from WinME to WinXP - Home Edition! ;) Chris

Yes it will. I have XP Pro and it seems to work just fine. -- Marshall "Nothing is impossible, We just do not have all the anwsers to make the impossible, possible."

Ah, thanks for that, Marshall. I do (now) wonder if that applies equally to the "Home Edition" of Windows XP? In retrospect I now see this issue is addressed in MANY (sic) discussions on the Web - Almost to the point of establishing an urban myth? <G> I will e.g. "look harder" - Unless anyone knows the immediate answer... I see THIS list as simply a bit (lot?) more authorative. :) Chris
