How to change MTU?
I would like to change the MTU in order to test my connection in order to optimize my cable modem. I have looked at the ifconfig file but in the "advanced editor" but it's uninteligible. Can someone tell me how I might optimize the connect and if there's a specific program that I might use? Thanx in advance. Curtiis Rey

ifconfig is not a configuration file to be edited, but an executable program which sets and/or displays the configuration parameters of an interface. mtu is one of the parameters it can set. read 'man ifconfig' for more detail. -- Rick Green "I have the heart of a little child, and the brain of a genius. ... and I keep them in a jar under my bed"

In Windows, the MTU is optimised for dialups (IIRC, 300 or so). That's why there are "cable modem optimisers" out there for windows. In Linux, different connection types are differentiated. For Ethernet, the default is 1500. Basically, your connection is already optimised. If you really want to play with it, pass the 'mtu <num>' option to ifconfig. - -- James Oakley Engineering - SolutionInc Ltd. joakley@solutioninc.com http://www.solutioninc.com -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.0.4 (GNU/Linux) Comment: For info see http://www.gnupg.org iD8DBQE62vdP+FOexA3koIgRAq0DAKCnGeH9mFntnz1Qvxl5eP2b4ZWXQwCfZNMm fauK9CuK3jQF5d/8KnawoCQ= =L+i4 -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----
