Thanks for those who responded. The quick and dirty: You can install TTF fonts for SuSE 9.1 by going to Control Centre/ System Admin/ Font Installer. There you will find under the TTF fonts section an option to add a font - just tell it the location and the font gets installed. Brilliant! Nico

Just so you will know, if you want simply to test a font, or to limit fonts to a particular user, for the use by xft apps you can simply copy the TTF files at issue into ~/.fonts if /etc/fonts/fonts.conf is as it should be.
