Printer setup in Staroffice 5.2
Hey, Group: A couple of days ago (I think) I saw something on this or the Caldera Refugee list about changing fonts in StarOffice 5.2 The response of one of the regulars on both lists advised the postee to go to Start=>Setting=>(whatever). I don't remember the details of the posting, but they are not important to this question (except for the info about changing settings). Yesterday I installed SuSE 7.2 Pro on a second machine along side Windows. I wiped out Red Hat 7.1 and SuSE 7.2 Personal in the process (intentionally). Then I ran the setup program for StarOffice 5.2 (I have the boxed set) and then attempted to print a document in StarOffice. What I got was the document printed in 5 or 6 point type. That's when I navigated to Start=Settings=>"look, Ma, no settings." A little dialog popped up, which said "empty." My blood pressure moved up a dozen points or so, and I determined to check the other machine, which also has SuSE 7.2 Pro and StarOfice 5.2 installed. I clicked Start=>Settings=> - and was greeted with the same empty dialog. I checked the SO 5.2 Setup Guide and the User Guide as well, and found no mention of how to set up the printer. I went to www.sun.com/support and found no help there, either. I looked in all the usual places in SuSE 7.2 for relevant SO 5.2 docs and came up empty. Anyone know what the hell has happened? Did I overlook something crucial but not-so-obvious in the setup process for SO 5.2 on both machines? Any ideas? TIA Regards, Glenn -- Glenn Williams - n0hn@abq-nm.com Registered Linux User #135678 Powered by SuSE 7.2 Linux Professional
My 'settings' item is empty too, but on my SO desktop there's a 'Printer setup' link. Perhaps that's what you're looking for?! regards Anders On Monday 01 October 2001 20.16, Glenn Williams wrote:

Hi, Anders: I found the Printer Setup icon on the SO desktop okay. The only printer driver I can find is the one installed as default (generic printer). Do you know of a source for printer-specific drivers for SO 5.2? I think SourceForge has HP drivers for Linux, but I dunno whether those will work with SO. Thanks so much for your help. I usually go to: /opt/office52/program and run spadmin which will set up printers for all users. Don't think you need a specific driver. -- +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ + Bruce S. Hi, Bruce: That was the ticket. I ran spadmin and got the following error message, which turned out to be very useful: "File error /opt/office52/share/xp3/Xpdefaults is write protected. Changes may not be made. You can use the button Save settings locally to maintain your personal settings." I saved the settings to my /home/gaw directory, and a driver selection dialog appeared, from which I selected a driver for a printer similar to my Lexmark 5700, and things began to fall ito place. KMail thinks the rest is a sig and doesn't copy it into the reply. It's a small point, but easily avoided. To your question: are you saying that the lower half of the window 'installed drivers' is empty? I have a default install of StarOffice from the SuSE DVD and there are oogles of drivers there. regards Anders

Anders: Thanks for responding. See my later post for the solution to my printer problem. As for the break between the message body and my signature, that has been a default of the Kmail signature file function since I first began using Kmail. I'll find some way to eliminate it if you insist, but I've no other complaints in this regard over a considerable length of time. I wonder if anyone else has trouble with my sig. I assume this is what you meant: "-- Glenn Williams - n0hn@abq-nm.com Registered Linux User #135678 Powered by SuSE 7.2 Linux Professional" I am running Kmail 1.2. The signature is set up as follows: Setting=>Configuration=>Identity=>Signature and the separation "--" is generated automatically by Kmail. If this is not what you are referring to, then please explain in detail and I'll take further steps to remove the offending "--". No no. I have no problems with your signature at all. But in your reply to me, you quoted the thread, and then there was a -- and then came your reply, then another -- and then your proper signature. KMail interpreted the first -- as the signature break, and refused to copy your reply to the mail editor when I clicked reply. <quote from your previous reply to me>

The proper signature is perfectly alright with me. Anders On Tuesday 02 October 2001 17.41, Glenn Williams wrote:

I had the same problem but didn't know the reason for it. Never have seen that problem before. Thanks for the explanation. -- +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ + Bruce S.
