[OT] Several kernel developers "banned" or "purged"?..
Hello, what could mean this message from a kernel development chief: https://lore.kernel.org/all/2024101835-tiptop-blip-09ed@gregkh/ for the future of the development of our System and its Kernel?. Could someone who understands this matter explain it in simple terms?. Thanks in advance. Regards. Jose Luis. -- https://lordofunix.org/ Not Registered GNU/Hurd User. Registered BSD User 51101. a) this email doesn't say much directly. b) context is all those purged are supposed to be Russia affiliated. Why it took 2 1/2 years I dunno. c) they're not allowing a lot of dissent on this, you can expect it's political and legal. gregkh said its compliance related... that likely means that they want passport or other documentation that says they're not actually Russia affiliated. Which can be difficult if the claim then made is hostage family. the likely legit reason was the supposed China-backed compromise of XZ/liblzma... why it took 9 months I don't know. Note I'm not saying it's legit... just that we're in a bad spot with a belligerent nation. Sent from myPhone.

El Register Article Seems violations of the Budapest Memorandum by dear-leader has consequences for dear-programmers. (the article leaves open whether those expelled were giving time on their own to kernel development or whether they were programmers for the state) https://go.reg.cx/tdml/dfd67/67426c7f/1defd8cd/4eNq We all have hands in the global future together, whether it be preserving the planet or preserving the sovereign integrity of borders. Seems that lessons hard-learned from history of the 1940s and the protections put in place to avoid a repeat are not as well-ingrained as they should be. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.
