Re: [SLE] DVD+RW-Tools still the method for DVD+R(W) burning?
If you have used these programming tools priorly, and plan to use these scripts just for personal use, then use them. There will be incremental improvements in the software but nothing you should be worried about. If you use DVD, MAKE SURE THAT YOUR IMAGES ARE BIT-FOR-BIT SAME. Dvds are notorious for bit errors. Have you thought about DVD-RAM for backup instead? Ever noticed nobody has made a DVD Burner/Changer for just the purpose you state? Hmm. Date: Sat Aug 13, 2005 2:44 pm Size: 931 bytes To: suse-linux-e@suse.com Hi: I notice that here: http://fy.chalmers.se/~appro/linux/DVD+RW/ and here: http://fy.chalmers.se/~appro/linux/DVD+RW/tools/?M=D That the dvd+rw-tools package hasn't changed since Aug 2004, with version 5.21.4 I have Suse 9.1 with dvd+rw-tools-5.17.4.8.6-17 installed. I'm about to spend some time writing scripts to perform DVD+R backups using these tools. I am wondering if the more recent Suse versions are still using these tools, or if "the Linux world" has changed to some other DVD burning software that I should know about before spending this effort. Thanks for input. Good day! -- _____________________ Christopher R. Hmm.

Thanks for the reply, Adam. Actually, I use DVD-RAM as well. I have a very nice Panasonic SW-9573C cartridge DVD-RAM drive for backup. It works great. Trouble is, the media is quite expensive, so isn't suitable for archival. What I like to do is take alternating daily working backups. So I do one day on one side of 4.7GB DVD-RAM, then the next day on the other side. The following day write over the first side again. So there's at least the past two days on the double sided cartridge. But I also like to take a weekly backup and store that for longer term. In the past I could fit all my work on CD-R, (using CD-RW for dailies). I was very doubtful about the quality of DVD recordable media for data storage. And CD-R(W) for that matter too. So I have always used md5sum on my disks to verify. So far I haven't had any trouble with DVD+R recordings. But I wouldn't trust them alone even with verification, without having the daily DVD-RAMs as well. I trust DVD-RAM, but verify it as well. Good day! -- _____________________ Christopher R.
