Hi - I have a problem with the font that kmail uses for the message body of the mails. It's too big. Not hugely big, just irritatingly big. About 12 or 13 pt. When I use Configure Kmail --> Appearance -->use custom fonts, I can change the font of every part of KMail except the message body. Actually, to be precise I can change the font of the message body as well - I just can't make it smaller. I can make it bigger and it displays bigger. I can choose a different font and the different font is displayed. But Kmail just will not display the message body at anything less than about 12pt. It just will not go as small as the font size for, say, the composer, or the list of messages or the tree. It's as though KMail had a hidden setting : "Do not allow a a font size smaller than 12 point in a message body" It struck me that the message body part of KMail might be an KHTML component and that it was honouring some setting in Konqueror. But even when I set Konqui to allow fonts as small as 4 pt, nothing happens in KMail. It accepts small font sizes but will not display them. Anyone else have this problem? Any ideas? Best wishes - Ken

Yes, I have. After I have tried all reasonable methods, I had run Sax2, made some fictive changes so it has written conf as new and then I got the thing in order. Is interesting, that I have never heard anyone else to talk this about and I started to think, that maybe this is an issue with my graphics card (integrated intel 845). ain

Ain - Thanks for taking an interest in my problem. Are you saying your problem was cured by making these fictive changes? I've got a Nvidia card but I did have problems with the X display so your solution might work for me too. However, I'm a little reluctant to fiddle with sax2 because it was such a struggle to get my X display working at all. When I run sax2 I get a blue marching "out of synch box" across my screen. I don't want to jeopardise my current working setup by altering anything! Well, I'll probably have a go when I'm feeling braver. Thanks again. Best wishes - ken

Also, I'll describe my disaster(s). First, after installing I always some time use only KDE, with font size 12 it looks good and all settings can be applied correctly. When I first run Gnome, after returning to KDE fonts are huge, so I must set them to 10, then they are the same size as were 12 in beginning.. Kmail message and editor windows remain with huge fonts, changing settings doesn't affect them. Looks like my windowing system thinks that it must use now 100 dpi fonts instead of 75 dpi and I cannot find a configuration item to tell him, that it is a wrong guess... :) ain
Hi to everybody with problems with font size! I improved my kmail problem by visiting the SUSE support database. There's an article there about too big or too small fonts in KDE. It seems you could be running at the wrong display size. Physically measure your display and see what its size is in millimeters. I had a "Display Size" entry in XF86Config of 320 240. I replaced this by something more like the real size of the monitor - 360 270. Presumably I had the wrong values in the config file because my X setup did not go smoothly. Voila! Now I get smaller and neater fonts. I still can't get kmail to shrink my message body text but it doesn't matter now because it's OK as it is. I hope this is of some help. Best wishes - Ken

Hm, my monitor is exactly 320x240, but I took my calculator and calculated what must these dimensions be with 96x96 dpi and my working resolution. So I replaced the right values with wrong ones and all is Ok now :) ain

Normally use 11, but just tried 8 - looks small. David

I was having the same problem. I'm on a laptop with a UXGA screen and was having a hell of a time getting XF86 configed correctly. After I did that, I had to adjust the screen size to give me 96 dpi. Once I did that, kmail functioned as it should with regard to font size. You can set the fonts to use in XF86Config, I'm using the 100 dpi fonts, but they really only seem to affect gnome apps, not kde.

Yes, that was it. Many thanks. ain
