If what you're trying to do is create a simple ASCII text file by typing into a window or terminal, do this: type: "cat >filename.txt" (without the quotes, of course - and include the space) Then start typing into the window. When you're finished, hit CTRL-D you will have a file named filename.txt. -- JAY VOLLMER JVOLLMER@CONSOLIDATEDLINT.COM TEXT REFS DOUBLEPLUSUNGOOD SELFTHINK VERGING CRIMETHINK IGNORE FULLWISE

Why the space? Works here without it. -- (o< //\ Powered by SuSE Linux V_/_ Virusproof. Crashproof. 1:48pm up 24 days, 20:44, 27 users, load average: 1.15, 1.12, 1.09 processes 2207655

Okay, I guess you don't need the space. I put it in out of habit. -- JAY VOLLMER JVOLLMER@CONSOLIDATEDLINT.COM TEXT REFS DOUBLEPLUSUNGOOD SELFTHINK VERGING CRIMETHINK IGNORE FULLWISE

I'm never sure when one's actually needed, you see a lot of commands with spaces where they're not required e.g. the | between commands. When operating a computer I try to be as lazy as possible. -- (o< //\ Powered by SuSE Linux V_/_ Virusproof. Funny, I try to be as lazy as possible no matter what I'm doing. -- JAY VOLLMER JVOLLMER@CONSOLIDATEDLINT.COM TEXT REFS DOUBLEPLUSUNGOOD SELFTHINK VERGING CRIMETHINK IGNORE FULLWISE

# cat > file type what you want ... ^D Note that Linux uses control-D, where DOS uses control-Z

There is always more than one option. touch filename.txt ; will create a empty file vi filename.txt ; will open a new text file in the advanced text editor vi (try 'man vi' for commands). cat>filename.txt ; will make simple text file (as described byothers already) or try (if installed): joe filename.txt ; this will give you another simple editor (press ctrl+k+x to save and exit). or try (even better): pico filename.txt enough choice -- Cheers, Jeroen
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 HI all,,,, Don't forget the "script" command either. At the command line type in script. You will get a propt and then run whatever programs you want. When done type "exit" . You will find everything that was on the screen in a file called typescript.txt (I think that's the name). Then edit the file to do whatever you want. Hope this helps,, JIM On Friday 27 June 2003 20:14, Jeroen wrote:
