[opensuse] Drop back to minimal Text Only
Hi All, I have a small problem to solve. We have a server with LXDE but this is not needed. What packages do I have to uninstall to drop the server down to minimal server (Text Only) mode? Thanks -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
systemctl set-default multi-user.target will put your system to the
old run level 3.

and 'systemctl isolate multi-user.target' will stop the window manager
and shutdown any graphical.target service, it's equivalent of 'telinit
3'

Hi All, Paul,
I have a small problem to solve. We have a server with LXDE but this is not needed. What packages do I have to uninstall to drop the server down to minimal server (Text Only) mode? You don't actually need to remove any packages (but, you can if you want to). You can, instead, run yast2. Under "services manager", change the default system target to "multi-user system". It might be a little bit different under older SuSE's, but should be similar.
Hope this helps! -Nick -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

That's have told you how to run at level "2" or ow to run at 'multi-user.target' rather than 'graphical.target'. That's fine and correct, but to answer your question as asked,, well the simplest thing is to remove the X server. # zypper remove xorg-x11-server That will drag with it a whole pile of things related to graphic services! It is now impossible to run any graphical services. The LXDE binaries are not removed by this - I think they ought to be, but the way the package dependencies are set up that's not so. When I run # rpm -q --whatrequires xorg-x11-server I get told about kdm-4.11.21-17.2.x86_64 because I run KDE not LXDE. YMMV However that gives me the clue that i should run a series of "whatrequires" and "whatprovides" on the the components that I do know about. Finally, you can run "rpmorphans" to see what is left 'orphaned' b this. You'll probably see many libraries, but be careful: check nothing else needs then. Also. many applications appear orphaned because they are at the top of lists and don't have anything depending on them. Use this tool judiciously. -- A: Yes. > Q: Are you sure? >> A: Because it reverses the logical flow of conversation. >>> Q: Why is top posting frowned upon? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
