How can I create a batch file to start a program with some arguments? For example, there's a program that I start from a console command line with the following: xboard -ics -icshost 164.58.253.13 -icshelper timeseal. That's rather long to type so a batch file would be handy... It could of course be started from the command line, but the ideal solution would be from the KDE desktop. Is there a How-To file about that somewhere? Any XBoard user here who has solved this "problem"? There are several ways to do this, some easier, but the closest thing to a batch file would be a shell script. Open up a text editor (I prefer vi, but you will probably use kwrite) and enter this: #!/bin/sh xboard -ics -icshost 164.58.253.13 -icshelper timeseal Now save it as something like xbstart and put it somewhere like a subdirectory called bin in your home directory. Then make it executable with a command like this: chmod 770 xbstart. Once you do that you can call it from the command line by typing xbstart, or you can create an icon on your kde desktop to point to it. An easier solution avoiding the "batch file" like shell script is to simply create an icon on your kde desktop pointing to xboard with the appropriate arguments. I just thought I would show you the other for future reference. Read the KDE help files for instructions on making icons and menu entries. One more option, just to get you really confused, would be to create an alias. This can be temporary, or added somewhere like your profile so it is active whenever you log in. This is what that looks like: alias xbstart='xboard -ics -icshost 164.58.253.13 -icshelper timeseal' Good luck. -- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Darren R. I tried your first suggestion and it works perfectly :-) Next step will be to configure the "alias" option, and eventually starting XBoard from the desktop. Just curious, have you had the occasion to try a chess client named Gnome-Chess? Is it worth the trouble of installing Gnome? Thanks for helping a Linux newbie ;-) Kind regards, Francois Bertin On Sat, 01 Jul 2000, you wrote:
