Changing IP addresses
Greetings all I have a problem looming.. I have 3 Windows boxes (2Win 98SE and a Win 2k pro) behind a SuSE 7.1 box that is doing NAT/Firewall duty for them. The firewall script is a custom made ipchains script. Currently the SuSE box (eth0) had a static networked address of 10.10.x.x and the 3 Windodws boxes (connected to the SuSE box through eth1) have static addresses in the range of 198.162.0.2 through 198.162.0.4. Now my ISP says that I must connect to the net using DHCP. This is fine in theory, but I have no experience setting up a DHCP system. From my readings so far it seems easy to initially set up a DHCP client to my ISP, but I would also like to set the SuSE box up to do DHCP/Nat/Firewall for the Win boxes as well. I understand that when I set up the SuSE box as a DHCP server for the Win boxes I should be able to specify the 192.168.0.0/16 IP address set for the Win boxes to use to connect to the net through the SuSE server. Is it simple to do this as well? What is the procedure for changing everything from static IP to DHCP? Is there any doc's I can look at to get more info? I have read nice large green book that came in the box that 7.1 came in and found it to be disturbingly lacking in info for making this kind of change. TIA Doug
I can't say anything about the external address, except that SuSEFirewall2 has no problem with DHCP assigned external addresses. However, just because the ISP assigns a dynamic IP doesn't mean you need to use DHCP internally - just set up NAT and masquerading and forwarding... Be kind to yourself, get- from www.shorewall.net, read and use Shorewall. You will live longer with your hair, if you have any left by now, and you will think kindly of Linux and iptables. Simply follow the quickstart guide and you will be in network heaven before you know it. Richard

thanks for the advice Richard, I took a look at the site...to use it would mean upgrading to the 2.4 kernel and use iptables....something I have thought about but not done yet. I am still using the 2.2.19 kernel with ipchains. I may have to go that upgrade route yet.(yech) I figure if i have to upgrade the kernal I may as well find the cash and get the version 8.1 and do a clean install....choices, choices, choices... Doug
Hi At best, You need to activate masquerading, and tell in yast that You will use dhcp to get IP for Your external NIC.. that's it! Jaska. Viestissä Maanantai 9. Joulukuuta 2002 21:59, Doug Roberts kirjoitti:
