Ewan and Andre - Thanks for your suggestions on the adsl timeout. I've actually got "idle 1800" in my /etc/ppp/options (I must have put it there in another lifetime) but it is definitely not honoured by the adsl connection. I think the "idle" that counts is in the IDLETIME in the /etc/sysconfig/network/providers/dsl-provider file. Yast2 obviously writes the value here. I could changeit to zero, but that might blow yast's mind when it next runs and tries to set its drop-down combo to the current value. I've only had my broadband connection up and running for two days and I'm not in the mood to experiment. I think "If it aint broken, don't fix it" Best wishes - Ken On Sunday 16 June 2002 11:05 am, you wrote:
look in /etc/ppp/options for a line saying "idle 600" and comment it out or set it to 0.

I've just got broadband working on SuSE 8.0 with an Alcatel Speedtouch USB modem. However, kinternet keeps logging me out after 5 minutes of inactivity. I suppose this is because of the Yast2 setting for "idle time" for DSL.
I know it only takes a second to re-connect with ADSL, but I'm hoping to set up a home network and allow another machine to use the connection. Ideally, I'd like a permanent login. But the Yast2 dialogs only allow an idle time of up to 600 seconds. There's no option for "infinite".
I suppose I could try "dial on demand" or perhaps set up a program that keeps the link alive, but I would have thought it was possible to set up a permanent connection.
Anyone know how to do this?
