RE: [SLE] Configure Yamaha sound card using Suse 6.4
-----Original Message----- From: Carlos E. R. 6.4! That's old version, no longer supported. *** Yes i know it's (very) old version. But my consideration is coz my notebook (P1, 1GB, 64MB) is same old as my Suse version. So i thought, 6.4 should be enough ;-) *** What do u mean by 'no longer supported'? is it not supported by Suse (company) or ...? Let's say it's not supported by Suse, but i am assuming as long as the driver is provided (included in CD) then I should be able to configure it. Am i right? *** If I'm using the current version, do you think the installation will be easier? coz i heard the latest version is already auto-configure. TIA,

I think you should be able to upgrade at least to 7.3 easily :-) I also have mi old Pentium 120 with 32 Mb ram with SuSE 7.3. The upgrade from 7.1 was slow, but it worked - but you have double memory than mine, it should be easier for you. Ah, don't forget: if you do it, back it up first, just in case (sometimes it fails). Ah, and I have a 386SX-20 with SuSE 6.1 or 6.4 :-p

Right. I mean that SuSE no longer actively support it, that is, they don't provide any new patches. You can find the updates they developed in their unmaintained directory of their ftp server. Of course, if your card has a driver, it should work. How? I don't remember :-)

Yes, each new version was easier each time. However, have a look at the documentation included with your CDs, including the howtos. The Sound-HOWTO.gz (jul-2001 edition) mentions the yamaha: |Yamaha OPL2 sound |Yamaha OPL3 sound |Yamaha OPL3-SA1 |Yamaha OPL3-SA2 | |chip |chip |sound chip |sound chip | +------------------+------------------+------------------+----------------+ |Yamaha OPL3-SA3 |Yamaha OPL3-SAx |Yamaha OPL4 sound |Yamaha YM3812 | |sound chip |sound chip |chip |sound chip | All those are supported by the kernel sound driver; often it meant recompiling (I remember having to enter the IRQ for my old soundblaster in the kernel configuration, that is, hard coded). In some files in /usr/src/linux/Documentation/sound/ (kernel 2.4.20, not your case) there is mention of the yamaha. Have a look there, you may find information there. It may be that you simply need the correct line set up in /etc/modules.conf, but I don't know what that will be. But have a look there, you might find that the correct line is there, simply commented out. You'll have to find it, edit the irq, dma, io port (if applicable) and enable it. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
