-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi, it's rare that I am soliciting this list for help, but maybe someone could share his experiences with me. I have browsed the hardware compatibility list at http://www.sane-project.org/sane-backends.html to find a suitable USB scanner model. However, it seems as if most of the models listed on there are no longer available (except as used devices on eBay). Does anybody have a recommendation for a flatbed scanner, connected via USB2 that works flawlessly with Linux (openSUSE 10.3 in particular) and is still on sale (especially in Europe/Germany)? Thanks in advance for your suggestions! I'm quite happy with my EPSON V700 for which I use vuescan. -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Med venlig hilsen/Best regards Verner Kjærsgaard Novell Certified Linux Professional 10035701 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

From time to time I notice a problem report regarding USB2 for this or that particular scanner / user / computer / openSUSE version so that it seems there are no general USB2-problems except the usual USB-crap related issues.

Almost anything from HP will be supported, except their very cheapest models which cut a few corners. They're the gold standard for manufacturer based printer & scanner support under linux. Epson reportedly also has fairly good support. John, This is not my experience few month ago. Things might have changed. When I looked into HP scanners you could run most of the all in one devices (fax, printer, scanner) but there was not support for any of the high end single purpose scanner. That's why I end up getting the Epson 4990 photo. http://hp-linux.cern.ch/support/devscanner.php3 -=terry=- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Brother also publish Linux drivers for a lot of their devices. I have an MFC-665CW all-in-one unit that works very well with both Linux and Windows machines. Check out their web site for details on what units are supported wtih Linux drivers. -- ====================================================== Rodney Baker VK5ZTV rodney.baker@optusnet.com.au ====================================================== -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

You use them on a i386-compatible true 64-bit system (i.e. AMD 64-bit)? Or perhaps even on a non-i386-compatible platform? ;-) Kind Regards Johannes Meixner -- SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, Maxfeldstrasse 5, 90409 Nuernberg, Germany AG Nuernberg, HRB 16746, GF: Markus Rex -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Sorry, Johannes, I can't tell you that. I don't have a 64-bit platform to test with. I don't recall any mention of 64-bit compatibility or otherwise on the Brother website (but I haven't actually looked for it either). -- ====================================================== Rodney Baker VK5ZTV rodney.baker@optusnet.com.au ====================================================== -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

That HAD been my expeience, too. When I needed to replace my old 5470C HP scanner, I went down and bought another one - but to this day it has lousy support and a very wonky driver. Epson, on the other hand has a great scanner 4490 AND driver support. -- Bob Smits bob@rsmits.ca A: Because it messes up the order in which people normally read text.
