[opensuse] usb mouse scroll doesn't work
Hello: I have changed my computer. The new machine has only USB input for mouse. Previously I used PS/2 mouse and it worked well. In the new machine the scroll function of the mouse's third button doesn't work (though it works as a clickable third button). The OS is openSUSE 12.2 with KDE 3. How can I configure the mouse in it? Another problem is the mouse pointer: it disappears at some areas of the screen, eg on xsane's preview window or on window title bars between the maximize and minimize labels. I guess this is graphic driver problem, Xorg.0.log has: X.Org X Server 1.12.3 Release Date: 2012-07-09 [ 81144.042] X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0 [ 81144.042] Build Operating System: openSUSE SUSE LINUX ... If it is a machine with an empty PCI slot you could install a PS/2 port card.

Haswell video didn't exist when 12.2 was released, so 12.2's Intel driver is not supporting your gfxchip. Haswell is missing from the list of supported Intel chips you included. That's why you're seeing all the VESA lines. You stripped the kernel cmdline from your Xorg.0.log paste, so another possible reason might have been inclusion of nomodeset in your grub stanza, but only if Haswell was supported. VESA is a crude and slow fallback driver, missing lots of functionality. Upgrading to a release containing an Intel driver that supports Haswell would likely solve both your problems. I'm using Haswell and KDE3 on 42.1 on this machine. It works well enough, and is secure enough, for me. Thanks Felix. I tried the machine with openSUSE 13.1 with KDE 3.5. The graphics/mouse pointer problem doesn't appear in it (nomodeset setting is not included in kernel boot line). What's your reason for sticking with long out of support 12.2?
That is the last openSUSE version with full working KDE3 including automount/safely remove USB flash disks and mount options for specific USB devices also can be set. Another problem is the mouse pointer: it disappears at some areas of the screen, eg on xsane's preview window or on window title bars between the maximize and minimize labels. I guess this is graphic driver problem, Xorg.0.log has:
I think this is all one problem, but it has been so long since I ran 12.2 that I can scarcely remember the steps. It might be that in that version there was still a xorg config file that you could mess with, to get wheel operations working again. (When I was running 12.2 I know wheel worked for both USB and Bluetooth, so this is clearly some settings problem in xorg.) -- After all is said and done, more is said than done. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Thanks, John. I have tested openSUSE 13.1-KDE3 on the same hardware. The graphics issue is solved but the mouse scrolling works only partially. Scrolling works occasionally, it works for a short time then stops. After while it works again. I included mouse related lines from my Xorg.0.log file in my previous answer. I don't have /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. Can it be an USB driver problem? When it stops, will a normal left-click on the affected window, followed by a scroll wheel usage cause it to work again? This works for me when my wheel scrolling stops working. But here's the odd thing: This only happens on my Microsoft Surface Pro tablet. Not on any linux machines. And all my mice are bluetooth except one these days. -- After all is said and done, more is said than done. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
