USB "PenDrive" Remount fails in 8.1 - works in 8.2
I've got a couple different brands of these pen drives that work exaclty once per boot in SuSE 8.1. If I insert the device, the icon shows up on the desktop and I can read and write to it just fine. Hotplug seems to work. If I take the device out of the usb port, and re-insert it some time later it will beep but nothing else happens. Lots of messages in /var/log/messages, but they look the same as the first insertion. The only way I can get access to it again is to reboot, and then I get one shot at it again. On SuSE 8.2 these same devices work flawlessly regardless of the number of insertions. What part of hotlpug or usb do I have to tweak to figure out this one? -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

Maybe youre forgetting to unmount the drive before removal? A mistake I did when first tinkering with my USB 80GB HDD. (Works great btw) jk -- Everyday above ground is a good day.

No, I carefully use the desktop Icon to unmount it. I have a 40gig USB HD that I planed to use for backup of my laptop but the machine only had USB 1.1, and its pretty slow. The USB drive can handle usb 1.1 and 2.0 as well as firewire. So I'm now searching around for a firewire cable with the right connectors. It also has the single mount problem on SuSE 8.1, but works well on 8.2. Still slow, but allows multiple mounts. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

Can you mount it manually with the command line? Is the problem just the fact that an icon doesn't appear? First, look at the /etc/fstab file. Near the bottom you should see what the device listed that the pen drive is (eg sda#, sdb..., could be something else). After which the directory it gets mounted to is listed. At a command prompt type mount /dev/<whatever> /media/<whatever>. It'll either work or give you a clue as to whats going on.

I have a "pen drive" made by simpletech that worked flawless in 8.0 but won't work at all in 8.2. Fails with: kernel: usb_control/bulk_msg: timeout kernel: usb=uhci.c: interrupt, status 2, frame@ 550
What part of hotlpug or usb do I have to tweak to figure out this one?
Hope I'm not hi-jacking your thread, just a simular problem. Ken

Feel free to jump in, because this is a problem that obviously needs some work. These pendrives are becomming so cheap and convinent that having them work in Linux is pretty important. On your 8.2 problem, I had one of these pendrives that did not initially work under linux but did work under various versions of windows. It came with a format utility that only ran under under windows, and the format utility offered three different unexplained opitons (documentation pretty scarce). The options were labled boot options, and the choices were Floppy, Zip Drive, and hard drive. I chose hard drive (just a guess) and since that it has worked flawlessly under 8.2. So you might try a reformat on the device. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen
